Fluent remains a key word in the artist’s journey, both as an individual and an artist. Thanks to his multicultural upbringing, WiztheMc is gifted in multiple languages. Beyond just language, WizTheMc has found himself to be fluent in multiple musical genres as well, transitioning between hip-hop to Pop effortlessly.

Pushing the boundaries and concept of what it means to be a hip-hop artist or a “pop star”, WizTheMc is here to expand those ideas while building a strong musical foundation for himself. His latest single “WhoWho” showcases that desire to play around with his soundscape while always sticking to that fun energy fans adore. Get into the groove with “WhoWho” and read below to learn more about his inspirations, the importance of the visual side of his work and more.

LUNA: Recorded in quarantine, “For A Minute” and your upcoming track “WhoWho” really showcase your range as an artist. How did these creative processes differ from your typical process pre-COVID?

WIZTHEMC: For a Minute was a special one because that was 1 out of like 20 demos I made in the first 2 weeks of quarantine. For the longest time I didn’t even plan to put it out. “WhoWho” I wrote with my producer Hugo in Berlin last summer and the execution was way more sophisticated because of his production and arrangement abilities. Grateful to have his help on this one.

LUNA: How has your cultural backgrounds of both South Africa, Germany and Canada shaped you as an artist?

WIZTHEMC: I like to think that Cape Town, South Africa, being my birthplace instilled a lot of perspective and overall understanding of different parts of the world and the people living in it. Lüneburg, Germany, my hometown in Germany, made me want to break out of the small town mentality and initially made me so fascinated with the American Rap Dream. Toronto showed me my own abilities to be an entrepreneur and artist on a whole different continent. Each piece is as important as the next one, and I couldn’t be happier to be calling all these places my home.

LUNA: What’s been inspiring you lately?

WIZTHEMC: I feel like inspiration comes and goes but the important thing is to keep sitting down and trying to work the magic. I have no clue where the magic comes from, but the best thing I can do is give it time and space to let it come through. Sometimes I feel super inspired, and I can’t get a song out. Sometimes I’m trying to take a day off writing, and I write my favourite song. To answer the question: Everything and nothing.

LUNA: How have you seen your songwriting evolve since you first started writing music?

WIZTHEMC: I started with writing rap songs where the focus for me were the verses and what I was saying in them, but now I focus more so on the chorus and the melodies because that’s something I feel super intrigued by lately. All I can say is that seeing myself go from writing simple boom bap raps to writing structured pop songs has been a trip.

LUNA: The video for “Lied” is really beautiful and well done. Can you share a bit about the making of the video?

WIZTHEMC: It was the craziest production I was ever a part of. It was an absolute dream. A funny thing about all this is that I used to be really into filmmaking and becoming a camera man/ director was a teenage dream of mine. So to be on such a big set with an amazing crew like that fulfilled two dreams of mine at the same time. I have to give a big shoutout to the amazing people over at pique and to Angelica Milash for killing the direction.

LUNA: What role do you tend to play in the visual side of your work? Any upcoming video plans?

WIZTHEMC: I like writing treatments and building the story of a video. Sometimes letting go of that need to “have it exactly how I want it” can bring lots of magic out of the creative team when we are working together, as seen in the “Lied” Music video. Besides that, we are currently rolling out an EP and are shooting videos for a few of the tracks.

LUNA: If you could offer yourself a piece of advice when you first started making music, what would you say?

WIZTHEMC: It’s ok to take breaks to breathe and live life since only life itself can give you the inspiration and energy to make more music .

LUNA: You’ve found a balance of expanding your sound while staying true to yourself, which is really important. What do you want people to know about you as an artist?

WIZTHEMC: I really like what I’m doing, and I’m obsessed with finding new parts of myself that I can share through the music. All I want people to know is that I love what I’m doing and that it’s a privilege to share my work with every ear that gets to hear it.

LUNA: Where do you hope the rest of 2020 takes you?

WIZTHEMC: I hope it takes me to new sounds, new people, new experiences and more than anything, a better understanding of myself.
