LUNA: Congrats on your new album Someday Tomorrow Maybe! Can you talk a little bit more about how this creative process compared to your previous projects?
LOLA MARSH: Our 2nd album went smoother than our 1st. We think it's probably because we knew better how we want it to sound. We had fewer arguments about the sound, melodies, lyrics and we decided to make this album in a more ”in house” approach. Gil produced the album, and all of us were involved in the arrangements and recorded the songs together, without going into crazy recording sessions with millions of engineers and hundreds of guitars like the last time. We learned from our mistakes (:
LUNA: Did you prefer writing songs around an emotion or a narrative? Is there an emotion or story Someday Tomorrow Maybe centers around?
LOLA MARSH: When we write our songs we usually just meet together and start talking, playing, listening to new music. Sometimes we start from a narrative and then it leads us to write about a certain emotion.
We wrote and recorded this album during the past two years, while touring around the world. We wanted the title to sound like a title of a James Bond movie with a twist, ”someday tomorrow maybe” just sounded right(and actually it's a name of a song we wrote that didn't get into this album.. Maybe in the next one..someday, tomorrow, maybe..ha ha:)
LUNA: What track was the most difficult to create for this project?
LOLA MARSH: ”Give me some time” was definitely the most difficult song to produce. When we wrote it, we felt we really have something great, and believed it will be super easy to produce. So actually this was the 1st song that we recorded in the album, and the last one to be ready.. Classic.
LUNA: I love the visual aesthetic for the lyric video for “What I Am” - how important is bringing in that visual side to your music?
LOLA MARSH: We believe we have something very classic and cinematic about our music, it was always important for us to be creative in the visual side too.
Our stage is always decorated with flowers or other props, and our covers vibes usually look like a poster for a movie or something. It is very important for us to put effort in the visual world as well.
LUNA: You have a tour accompanying the album release and you’ve been fortunate to play a great deal of live shows. Having your base in Tel Aviv, what has been the biggest difference you’ve seen when traveling?
LOLA MARSH: We do feel really lucky to play all over the world, and to be able to spread our music and to get to many beautiful and interesting places.
We are based in Tel Aviv, and when traveling abroad we can definitely feel the difference between the middle eastern vibes and the European vibes or the states. Every place has its own special energy. Even inside the country. For example we toured a lot in Germany, and we can definitely say that Berlin is so different from cologne, or Hamburg or Frankfurt. Every city has its own style and energy. So frankly, it’s not about the difference between Tel Aviv and the rest of the world. Its about the difference between every city we’re getting to.
LUNA: Is there something you want people to take away from your music, or this album specifically?
LOLA MARSH: Yes. We really hope that our music is helping people feel happy or sad or emotional in any way, music has such power, it can really change your day , your energy. It’s such a great feeling to know that our song was played at a wedding or at a birthday party, or that our music got people together in some way. Music is a universal language, and we feel so lucky to be part of it.
LUNA: What intentions do you have for 2020?
LOLA MARSH: To keep on writing, keep on traveling, getting to new territories like Japan or Australia, writing music for movies and be happy and satisfied.
