LUNA: You’ve been writing and creating music for a good amount of time now - how have you seen your creative process evolve over the course of your career?
I'd say I've become more open to collaborations. I used to be so shy about opening up to other writers and being honest about what I am going through and how I want to talk about it, and now I feel more comfortable and more open. I think collaborations are important because it gives you a chance to explore different processes and experience different perspectives.
LUNA: Can you talk a bit more about the story and message behind your latest single, “SILLY WORDS”?
"Silly Words" is mostly about the beginning of a relationship and the overall fear that love brings. The impending doom. The fear of getting hurt and the anxiety that vulnerability brings.
LUNA: A lot of your music draws from personal experiences, how do you find that balance between expressing your emotions but not feeling too vulnerable?
I think as an artist it's important to write about what you know. I've always been more comfortable expressing myself in writing. I think it's more natural for me to write out my feelings. I feel like writing is a cathartic experience for me, and I don't worry too much about being overly vulnerable. I think vulnerability is an important part of expressing yourself, especially as an artist.
LUNA: How would you compare the music you’re working on now with your previous music?
My music has traditionally been very acoustic driven, but lately I've been experimenting with different sounds and beats. I've also been releasing the stripped down/acoustic version of each song to show a different side.
LUNA: You’ve mentioned the influence of Jazz on your music, but are there any non musical influences that has shaped you as an artist?
I would say, nature has always been a big influence in my life and music. I also love comedy. I try like to incorporate humor in my music and everyday life, because even though a lot of the subject matter I'm writing about might be sad, I'm inspired by humor. It's important to see humor in all things.
LUNA: If you could offer one piece of advice to young women trying to make their way into the music industry, what would you say?
I'd say, just being honest with yourself and be persistent, so that your most authentic self can succeed.
LUNA: In addition to music you have a background in creative writing, is that something you’d like to explore more outside of music? Are there any other mediums you’d like to explore?
I do. I write a lot of poetry, and I have written a screenplay. I like storytelling. I'm always trying to learn to new ways to tell a story.
LUNA: Over the years you’ve been able to collaborate with artists like Freddie Gibbs, Boogie and of course friend Leighton Meester - what value do you think collaborating with others has?
I love collaborating. Its allowed me to explore different genres and it creates a sense of community. It's nice to have people to reach out to who are experiencing similar things.
LUNA: “SILLY WORDS” is a great way to start the year off. What do you want the rest of 2020 to bring you?
Thank you. I've written so much new music. I'm excited to release new music and get on the road.
