On Aux: Flipturn

HOT OFF THE LATEST RELEASES OF DOUBLE SINGLES “HALFWAY” AND “BROOKLYN BABY”, 5-piece indie rock band Flipturn is hitting their sonic stride in style. The band’s reach has exploded past their hometown of Fernandina Beach, Florida with major streaming numbers, huge tour and festival gigs, and even a rubber chicken that serves as a tour mascot with a loyal fanbase. Their sound is passionate and energetic, offering a variety of danceable guitar riffs and hard hitting lyricism that is perfect for any music lover’s rotation.

Since our interview with the band in February of 2020, Flipturn has had their foot on the gas musically with both major releases and operating as an opener for Mt. Joy, Wilderado, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise on various tours. This summer they are slated on the iconic lineups of Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, SXSW, Hangout, Sunfest, and Treefort festivals, as well as hosting their own Playground Music Festival in Gainesville, Florida. Rounding out their major 2022, Flipturn will be releasing their debut studio album and embark on a headlining U.S. tour this fall.

Check out their picks for this edition of the On Aux playlist below, and make sure to catch Flipturn (and Jalapeno the tour chicken) at a show.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise - “Matchbox”

We recently played a few shows with RKS, and I remember hearing this song live for the first time and I instantly became obsessed with it. The guitar riffs and melodies are absolutely insane. I really resonate with the song as a whole, but I think I became hooked when I heard Ela sing ‘I’m in the back of a fifteen passenger van, doing an exposé on feelings I don’t fully understand.’ I just love it.” - Madeline

Twin Peaks - “Unfamiliar Sun”

“I recently just got back into Twin Peaks. This song is my favorite off their record Lookout Low, but the entire record is incredible. It’s perfect for driving down the interstate in the afternoon.” - Dillon

MUTEMATH - “Backfire”

’Backfire’ off of Armistice by MUTEMATH is an all time favorite. This record influenced the way I play behind a kit exponentially and is attached to most of my core childhood memories. Love this tune and this band. Hope you enjoy too!” - Devon

Djo - “Ring”

I heard this song live at Shaky Knees and it made me have a new appreciation for it. It wasn’t necessarily my “top” pick of this album at first, but that quickly changed. I love how Djo reaches into rock and roll roots and intertwines it with new-age production. The rhythm guitar work in the driving breakbeats are some of my favorite on the album. Very simple but exactly what the song called for.” - Mitch

Toro y Moi - “The Loop”

I added ‘The Loop’ by Toro y Moi because it talks about ‘being out of the loop’, which is something we deal with a lot being out on tour! It’s always so weird to think about how life just goes on around us when we drive from city to city every night.” - Tristan
