j. pastel - “Senegal”
Bedroom pop duo j.pastel release their new single, “Senegal,” a refreshing tune full of sweet notes and lovely lyrics that will make you daydream about a special person. The duo, Chase Durrett and Casey Bruce, combine 80s synth and dreamy guitars to create their unique take on bedroom pop, fusing their style with pop inspired lyrics that get stuck in your head. “Senegal” is about doing everything for the person you love, no matter what and no matter where, singing over again, “Life is better with you.” This is definitely a track you’ll instantly save and add to a playlist, dance around your room to, or share with your crush. “Senegal” will be the lead single for their upcoming debut EP, so keep an ear out for new stuff from j.pastel.
French Cassettes - “Utah”
Sometimes songs give off a certain feeling, certain memory, but in this case French Cassettes new single, “Utah,” gives off that ‘entering fall’ vibe. “Utah” has powering vocals and acoustic guitar notes and fuzzy drum beats that completely grab you to continue listening. It’s catchy yet melodic and wistful. The quartet are driven by harmony and “Utah” is possibly one of the best songs to showcase how they translate feelings into music. Inspired by Billy Withers and his turtleneck, they imagined him getting in a FIAT Spider and going on a roadtrip with no purpose but going fast. Ultimately the destination in their scenario is Utah. This is the song Billy Withers would listen to on the road, and maybe you’d like to romanticize a car ride with it too.
Jenny Mayhem - “Soon”
A 50's meets 80's new wave bop, Jenny Mayhem's “Soon” chronicles the rise of Rihanna, while fellow Barbados-born Jenny looks on with bittersweet admiration. The second track off Jenny's upcoming EP Social Piranha, “Soon” is living proof of Mayhem's continuous expansion and establishment of a sound that is quintessentially her.
The song follows tracks like “Pickup Boy”, “Who's Gonna Love You?” and “Rocketship”, and Mayhem's music stands out in its poppy tunes mixed with honest, vulnerable lyrics.
Found Space - “Shadows”
Warm and mellow, Found Space's “Shadows” is a song that fills the listener with a bittersweet nostalgia. Its lyrics are contrastingly more turbulent, confessing confusion and doubt.
About it, Spencer Smalley alias Found Space explains, “The underlying sonic warmth wrapped up my hurt in a nice thick blanket. I was able to come to terms with a few mysteries as a result. Love is the biggest mystery to me, and sometimes it's better left that way.”
The lovechild of Spencer Smalley, Found Space is a singer-songwriter vehicle dabbling in indie pop, alternative rock, dream pop and more. Lyrically, it is the combination of artistic upbringing and the pains of growing up.
Maude Latour - Block Your Number
Maude Latour mixes a sweet flow and just enough edge to keep you holding onto each note with her latest track “Block Your Number”. Noting the honesty and forwardness of the track, “Block Your Number” serves as a “song of heartbreak and turmoil, and represents the most vulnerable lyrics she has ever written.”
The upbeat flow and production fuels the cheeky, direct energy of the track, giving the listener that bit of encouragement to eliminate small talk and be direct. Maude Latour enters a more mature, refined era of her career with “Block Your Number” showcasing her growth.
