Now Listening: This Week's Tracks

Miynt - “Of The Sun”

“Of the sun” is the leading single off of Miynt’s upcoming album Lonely Beach set to come out May 2022. “Of the sun” Stays true to Miynt's signature blend of dreamy indie rock that meets Psychedelic pop. Groovy guitars take the forefront of the song while Miynt’s Hauntingly beautiful and airy vocals dance throughout. Although the song gives you the feel of walking through the beach with the sun beaming down on your face, and the sound of waves crashing against each other in the background, the MV setting is a snowy arctic realm that has a hazy vintage-like touch to it with a sprinkle of a 70’s vibe. Almost as if you’re visiting a dream somewhere other than the cold. In an interview with Flaunt Magazine, Miynt states that “This song was made during the darkest month in Sweden. I was playing around with the thought of an imaginary hotel called ”De la sol” which is badly spelled Spanish meaning Of the sun. I wanted to catch the mode of a lazy hotel-bar in the 70s somewhere closer to the equator. An escape from the not-so-sunny Stockholm.” Miynt is a self-produced artist based out in Stockholm whose music is described as Indie rock meets psychedelic pop. Since her debut as an artist, she has been featured on platforms like i-D, The FADER, The Guardian, Stereogum, Refinery29, Flaunt, DIY, L'Officie, as well as radio support from KCRW and SiriusXMU and has been named one of BBC Radio 1’s “New Wave” artists.

His Single “Espada Primo” was released on February 17th and is an exciting track that contains layers of vocals accompanied by funk guitars and a killer baseline. This track is “Heavily influenced by anime and artfully harnessing chaos” and Dray has put all his skill at the forefront of this track. Dray is known for his openness for experimentation that carries a sense of depth in his music. Winona Oak - “Island of the Sun”

Following Winona Oak’s critically acclaimed sophomore EP, SHE, her follow up has been heavily anticipated, and if her latest single “Island of the Sun” is an indicator of what’s to come, you should expect a fantastic debut. “Island of the Sun” is a captivating electro-pop track that highlights Oak’s signature dark-toned vocals. It is an ode to the small island in the middle of the Nordic forests of Sweden where Oak grew up called Solens ö - translating to Island of the Sun. According to Oak, “the island works as a metaphor for a place when everything’s peaceful and simple. Like that time in your childhood when the world is only as big and beautiful as you make it,” and the song essentially explores Oak’s longing to retain the peace and bliss of that time in our lives. While “Island of the Sun” is unafraid to express a raw emotiveness, Oak also showcases a kind of determination to return to this Solens ö. “Come with me/ Follow me now I wanna turn this around/ Give me a feeling like wow” she sings in the pre-chorus which ramps up to a punchy hook that almost commands you to dance. This is the title track of her upcoming debut album which is expected later this year. In the meantime, if you can’t get enough of Winona Oak’s brand of mesmerizing electro-pop, she has a versatile catalogue of memorable songs. From the unearthly industrial pop track “SHE” to the self-love anthem “With Myself”, Oak is sure to be your new favourite of 2022.

Maude Latour - “Headphones”

As a follow up to the wildly successful debut EP, Strangers Forever, Maude Latour is back with the single, “Headphones”. Following in the vein of her previous releases, “Headphones” is an immediately a charming song with all the colour and quirk you could expect from Latour. It has a laidback groove partnered with zany electronic production which adds a digitized quality to Latour's vocals - and this is only fitting for a Gen-Z artist who speaks to a Gen-Z audience. Arguably one of the most key lines to the song states, “now I’m crying out of nowhere, but I’m laughing through it”, a philosophy that is perfectly depicted in the accompanying visuals. The video is hyper-saturated, surreal, and shows Latour as she is finding her way through a strange and fascinating world, much like the one she and her generational peers are trying to figure out. “Headphones” is no doubt a single that will capture the hearts and ears of new and old fans of Latour.

Drive Deep - “Get It Out”

With soaring hypnotic indie beats, Drive Deep gives us “Get It Out” a wonderful song about a person who can’t let their love of a colleague be known. Personally, I’d like to lace up my skates and go down to the disco because this groovy tune really brings the heat. I’ve been trying to find the perfect song to start the transition from winter to spring and this one personally puts the spring in my step. Sometimes Lofi can seem one note but Drive Deep makes it sound dynamic and interesting. Drive Deep is newly emerging onto the scene but with more songs like this, I’m sure they’ll be Cult Classics soon.

Ocean Flaw - “Karmageddon”

Ocean Flaws’ new single is ‘Karmageddon’. Consecrated at Liverpool’s indie mecca, Sugar House studios, this high octane follow-up to Ocean Flaws’ 2021 alternative iTunes chart topper - Hologram - is a barrage of modern prophecy.

Experimenting with a trinity of influences - Interpol, White Lies, and Arcade Fire - Karmageddon is a deadly brand of iconographic indie Alchemy. With infectious beats and a stunning lyric video, “Karmageddon” is one for the ages. The song follows the flow of Karma, everything has an equal and opposite reaction. Released February 11th, this song is already splashing down and climbing up the iTunes charts. There’s something so rock and roll about their music that makes them one to watch for the future.

Don’t Connect - “Dead Ideas”

A fun instrumental flow and warped vocals quickly grab your attention in “Dead Ideas”, and the energy stays throughout the whole track. The London-based collective brings a charming beat to your week that’s sure to find a spot in your mind on repeat. “Dead Ideas” serves as the group’s first single and title track from their upcoming debut album. The band notes, “For a very long time I thought I would never finish this one and it would just become another dead idea like all of the other unfinished songs I have on my hard drive. Hence the line ‘My head is feeling worn but that's fine cuz my dead ideas are born.’ The song is mostly written about itself, because ever since Tom [Flyboy Jetty] recorded his vocals for the hook, I knew I was going to finish it because I really couldn't get it out of my head. The off-beat trumpet stabs are inspired by old jazz tracks.”

Layers of instrumentals come together for a thoughtful arrangement, complete with instrumentals breakdowns to further focus on the melody and feel the track creates. If this track serves as an insight into their upcoming project we’ve got a good feeling about what’s to come for the group.

SEB - “f**k it, i’m the man

Creating authenticity in the pop world is a line many artists don’t know how to toe, but if you’re SEB, you’re not toeing it, you’re straddling it. Riding the success of “god of the sunsets”, SEB creates a home-fi sound that brings back 80s nostalgia and makes us long for the days of big hair and puffed sleeves. The VHS-shot music video provides the perfect backdrop to SEB riding down the streets of Los Angeles lamenting on the struggles of individuality.

SEB says the song is meant to be about “standing on your own and living your life to you and only you.” The song’s origin derives from an argument that the artist had with a family member where he gets cut off and made to feel like a disappointment. “f**k it, i’m the man” focuses on fighting hiding behind your mask to be empowered to say what you need to say.

SEB is anticipated to release new music soon and with hits like “f**k it, i’m the man” we can only wait to see what’s in store.
