Work Drugs - “Winter Key”

Immediately the song gets you into a groove, which is a good way for both us and Work Drugs to start off 2020. The single “Winter Keys,” is their first single of 2020, and it just makes us want more. “Winter Keys” gives us a modern synth-wave which only means you have to groove out to it. The song is about escaping and redefining yourself, a motivation for 2020 many of us want. They make their music in hopes you can listen to it while dancing, boating, yachting, sexting, and living. So, they’re something to keep tabs on.

Dogeyed - “Waves”

Dogeyes doesn’t fail to impress with their new single, “Waves”,” a song about a failing long distance relationship. Knowing well that it’s sure to hit some of us, it hits in different ways. The song starts off with sweet guitar notes making the song feel warm like the sun. They leave space for listeners to experience the song as they want, not making the song packed into one theme. You get to feel what you feel, define the song in your own terms. Dogeyed is an indie rock trio that you want to keep your eye on and an ear out for.

In The Belly Of A Snake - “She’s The Sun”

The debut single from Cambridge based band “In The Belly Of A Snake” is an upbeat melody with lyrics to think about and feel. “She’s the Sun” recounts the tumultuous story of falling in love with your planetary other half, as told from the perspective of the Moon. The lyrics are direct references to the main story going on while still remaining universal and relatable, such as “Night after night I have watched you there,” and “Hands keep grasping, but I can’t hold on,”. The track itself is set to a strong guitar with the wallowing voice of the band’s lead singer cutting through each strum of the strings. With it’s complex and interesting mythology that pulls the listener in at first listen, “She’s The Sun” perfectly encapsulates the all-consuming cosmic feelings of falling in love with someone who’s just out of reach.

JW Francis - “Gold”

The dreaminess of Francis’ muffled vocals combined with an underlying electric base, that sounds so familiar it seems like a heartbeat, create a mood of happiness which the artist seeks to give as his gift to his listeners. The song is inspired by the famous Robert Frost poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, which centers around perfection being just a temporary fix for a world that’s sick with need for reality. As an Oklahoma-born, Parisian-raised and current New Yorker, Francis showcases his embracing of sounds as a universal truth that each person, regardless of culture, gender, or taste, can feel at home within and exhale along to. The track is as mellow as leaves falling and provides listeners with a safe space to relax in. With “Gold”, JW Francis continues to introduce himself as an artist that is committed to their own authenticity and making a positive difference in a negative world.
