On the rise singer, songwriter and producer Sarah Kinsley releases singles, “Karma”, and “Over + Under” showcasing a combination of indie lo-fi and dance-pop; an interlude between both genres influencing us to daze into the ambiance. While we’re hungry for fresh takes, Kinsley stands her ground by organically creating new sounds and rhythms as the future unravels a new age of music, incorporating females as the leading forces in production. This project marks Kinsley’s first release with independent music label, Everybody’s Music, with “Karma” and “Over + Under” giving us some insight into the feel of the rest of the project.

“Karma” depicts a modern criticism that we struggle with in relationships today - the signs can be obvious yet alluring to contemplation of letting a person in; almost naked, susceptible of closeness to the heart. Being vulnerable can be troubling: frightened of the outcome, there is no end in opening ourselves and being seen and heard and felt can be empowering. Channeling these feelings becomes works of art. “I was definitely having some sort of existential crisis, I think everyone went through this a couple times over the past year. After spending so much time brainstorming, questions arose and having that gap in between to ponder and wonder about things I don’t have answers to, instead of letting it eat at you, I tried to think and the realization came over me that I don’t have control over anything,” Kinsley says. “We’re kind of specks in this world, and that’s okay. I can dance to that and live with it in the most exciting way that I know how to. That was the inspiration behind ‘Karma’.” Even if it is not recognized, the ability to share, openly discuss fragments dug beneath our silence is rewarding in itself.

Behind the formation of lyrical ballads, songwriters find themselves in obstacles entertaining around the magic soon to come to life. Dotting down our ideas, ripping and tearing, rewriting is an incessant cycle that can often discourage us in the midst of our crat, but not for Sarah Kinsley. “Over the summer of 2020, I had a terrible writer’s block. The process began slowly, trying to get, you know, scraps of a song together. While I was working on another song, I just had no ideas for it and then I was thinking of the word karma… listening to various types of music, influenced the ambiance in the song. But as soon as I realized these two words rhyme, karma, and I want you, this phrase, it sparked very fast and I finished it quickly.” Stumbling on the path, Kinsley continued to push through; despite the difficulty, what is evident in her experience is to never doubt the process but to stay focused. Without a thought, something good will come beyond our expectations.

Raising excitement, Kinsley talks of happiness and maintaining an optimistic view as it ties into the success of her work behind Karma”. “I was talking to one of my best friends who I go to school with about the video idea of fortune-tellers and circling around this mystifying idea of what fate is. When filming, we wanted to shoot on a roof to represent the height of everything.”

The energy emanating loudly, putting us in a daze, the sound simultaneously flowing as Kinsley dances on the rooftop. The anticipation for more awaits as Kinsley talks of new work. “I’m really excited about this next one because I sampled a lot of stuff from my bedroom. The intimacy is prominent, but I’ve been really honing in on using new sounds and exploring different kinds of sonic landscapes.” Kinsley continues. “Sometimes in songs you can hear the same instruments or the same samples, but this is purely from me… I made it with my own hands and continued to experiment and recorded it.” While Kinsley’s first EP, The Fall, begins her journey as a prospering music artist, there is a lot to look forward as she continues to embrace the purest matter that makes us human.

A new wave of art is upon us. We can choose to wait or invest ourselves in the craft, such as Sarah Kinsley, herself, becoming one of many music artists that have yet to participate in this movement. “In the meantime, I’ll be working on my new EP... Someone new coming into the industry, myself for instance, doesn’t have much of a selection to choose from but what I’m hoping to accomplish this year is to keep mixing and dig deeper into who I am as music artist if not person. That’s what really matters and I can’t wait.”
