RAAVI'S LATEST PROJECT THE UPSIDE takes the Boston-born, New York-based pop-rock band in an unexpected yet captivating direction. Known for their raw indie sound and powerful guitar-driven compositions, the quartet, led by singer-songwriter Raavi Sita, has carved out a unique space in the NYC music scene, blending alternative rock and emo-adjacent catharsis with heartfelt lyrics. On The Upside, however, Raavi pulls back from their signature rock sound to explore quieter, more intimate territory, showcasing a new side of their artistry.

The EP carries a distinct sonic shift from Raavi's previous work, stripping away the massive guitars and embracing a more folk-inspired sound. The songs on The Upside are built on minimalist, acoustic foundations that allow Sita’s thoughtful songwriting to take center stage. Drawing influence from '70s folk icons like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, the album pairs gentle melodies with deep reflections on personal growth, identity, and self-discovery. Tracks like “Henry” and “Take Me” pull from Sita’s real-life experiences, from her exploration of gender to the complexity of intimacy, all set against a serene musical backdrop.

What sets The Upside apart from Raavi’s past work is its daring formal sensibility. Sita has composed each song without the typical reliance on a repeated chorus, creating a collection that feels unconventional yet beautifully cohesive. The more stripped-down production allows listeners to lock in with the lyrics, creating an emotional experience that’s as raw and unfiltered as the themes themselves. Tracks like “Shadows” delve into the disillusionment Sita has felt within the male-dominated music scenes she has navigated, while the subtle instrumentation enhances the vulnerability of these songs.

Though The Upside marks a departure from Raavi’s rock origins, it’s clear that this EP is a special chapter in their evolving discography. The emotional depth and narrative strength within the album signals a profound shift toward self-awareness and personal reflection, and while this quieter, more contemplative style may not be permanent, it’s a testament to Raavi’s versatility and willingness to take risks. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, The Upside offers a deeply rewarding listening experience that invites reflection and introspection.
