Review: Lil Nas X Delivers Rap Spectacle in Toronto
On Friday, September 16th, American rapper and singer, Lil Nas X, took to Toronto’s RBC Echo Beach and put on a show that was unlike any other. With playbills being handed out and a three-act live performance that kept you wanting more, Lil Nas delivered one of the most unique and thrilling concerts to date.
Being Lil Nas X’s first world tour, the Georgia native did not hesitate to go all out. The show began with an introductory video welcoming all “ladies and gentlemen, and nonbinaries, and bottoms.” Lil Nas X, also known as Montero Lamar Hill, brought a safe space for all queers and allies, even including “The Trevor Project” on the playbill, a non-profit organization that operates as a support system for LBGTQ youth. The show then began with Lil Nas swiftly entering the stage alongside his 8 talented backup dancers.
The first act, “Rebirth,” presents Lil Nas’ beginnings with stardom, with performances of hit songs “Panini” and “Old Town Road.” In Act II, “Transformation,” Lil Nas X demonstrates his growth starting with “Dead Right Now,” eventually transitioning into “That’s What I Want,” a confident tune about wanting genuine love. The third act, “Becoming,” finishes everything off with Lil Nas having completed his full transformation. He brings on performances of his newest era of music, with the grand finale song: “Industry Baby.”
It is very clear how much thought and work was put into this show. Along with the 8 amazing backup dancers who each got their own introduction, Lil Nas X’s choreography displayed punchy hip-hop moves, light ballet dances, and lots of twerking, of course. Not only that, the set and prop design was beautiful, with a large metal horse, golden bed, and animated graphics that suited each song. We can’t forget to mention the stunning wardrobe that Nas and his dancers wore: each act brought on a variety of sparkly and colorful outfits, some of which were presented on the playbill.
For his first world tour, Lil Nas X created a high-energy, immersive performance that is similar to the likes of Vegas residency shows. The Georgia native has once again proved that he will continue to unapologetically be himself, and always be a top-performing star.
