ON TUESDAY NIGHT AT EMO’S IN AUSTIN, fans were treated to an unforgettable performance by Ginger Root, the one-man powerhouse helmed by Cameron Lew and live band. Having watched Ginger Root’s career blossom from one of the early features in the magazine back in 2018 and catching a previous show at The Echo in Los Angeles in 2019, it’s clear that Lew has reached new heights both musically and visually. The energy, aesthetic, and vibe of his set were mesmerizing, showcasing just how far he’s come.
Ginger Root’s recent success has been hard to miss, and the hype was palpable as the crowd buzzed with anticipation. Lew has crafted a unique retro-inspired aesthetic that combines the smoothness of city pop with a modern indie flair, often referred to as “aggressive elevator soul”. His commitment to the visual side of his music was evident on Tuesday night, with a stage setup featuring analog TVs that complemented his signature style — cool, clean, and undeniably stylish.
From the moment he stepped on stage, the vibe was electric. Lew knows how to set a mood, and he carried that vibe effortlessly throughout the entire set. With a mix of smooth grooves, vintage synths, and catchy hooks, he had the audience swaying and singing along from the first note to the last. His blend of indie pop with Japanese city pop influences felt right at home in Austin’s diverse music scene, and the crowd responded with an energy that matched his own.
One of the standout aspects of Ginger Root’s show was the thoughtful staging and setup. The visuals were perfectly in sync with the music, amplifying the retro feel that has become synonymous with Ginger Root. Lew’s ability to transform the stage into an immersive experience was a testament to his growth as an artist; it was clear he had put a lot of thought into every detail, making sure that both new fans and long-time followers were taken on a cohesive journey.
Ginger Root’s performance at Emo’s showcased a musician fully in command of his craft, balancing smooth grooves with quirky charm, and leaving the audience wanting more. If this show is any indication, Cameron Lew’s Ginger Root is poised for even greater success, bringing his retro-modern aesthetic and infectious energy to stages far beyond Austin.
