Review: Deadmau5 in San Francisco

DayoftheDeadmau5 block party was a standout night for electronic music lovers. The day kicked off with strong performances by Callie Reiff and Volaris, both of whom delivered engaging sets that warmed up the crowd. Callie Reiff set the tone with her high-energy beats, while Volaris followed up with a dynamic performance that kept the momentum going, gradually building the anticipation for Deadmau5’s headlining set.

When Deadmau5 (Joel Zimmerman) took the stage, it was clear that the night was about to go to another level. He performed an extended three-hour set that kept the energy high from start to finish. Joel was locked in the entire show as there weren't too many crowd interactions or breaks between songs. Minimal crowd interactions isn’t a bad thing I’d like to point out, just something I noticed compared to other concerts I’ve covered. Even with the surprisingly hot San Francisco night and minimal breaks in intensity, the crowd stayed locked in just as well dancing the entire night… literally. I remember there was only one slow, low-energy track during the entire performance, which was a welcome breather amidst an otherwise relentless set. The moment allowed the audience to catch their breath before being swept back into the pulsating beats.

The lighting and visuals, always a key part of a Deadmau5 show, complemented the music perfectly, creating an immersive experience that had the entire venue in awe. I even caught a conversation from some people in the crowd talking about how “the visuals were so much better than the last DayoftheDeadmau5”, so it’s good to see things continuing to improve and evolve. The overall atmosphere was electric, and by the end of the night, it felt like everyone in attendance had gotten an intense workout from dancing. The Midway proved to be an ideal venue for the event, providing an intimate yet energetic space for fans to fully immerse themselves in the music.

In all it was an unforgettable experience, and Joel’s ability to sustain such high energy throughout his entire set is a testament to his mastery as a live performer. This show was a true gift to long-time Deadmau5 fans and new listeners alike, setting the bar high for future block party events in San Francisco.
