Review: Bad Suns Release Infectious Cover of “Lovefool” by The Cardigans
FROM ROYEL OTIS’ RENDITION OF “LINGER” BY THE CRANBERRIES to Declan McKenna’s take on ABBA’s “Slipping Through My Fingers,” some of today’s top indie acts are reaching new heights with viral covers. Paying homage to musical greats is not just for karaoke bars and impromptu shower performances — some of your favorite musicians are heading to radio stations and recording studios to bring their flair to classic songs.
Today, California-based Bad Suns are releasing a studio version of The Cardigans’ “Lovefool” after performing the song at some of their live shows. Frontman Christo Bowman says the single is a long time coming. A few years ago, he heard “Lovefool” at the grocery store and made a voice memo to himself to suggest that the band cover the song — a long-time favorite of his.
“The cashier overheard me, looked at me and said, ‘That’s a really good idea.’ The rest is history,” says Bowman. “We took it out on the road, started playing it at shows, and had so much fun with it. The next thing I knew, we were in the recording studio making our own version.”
The band has infused their signature indie rock sound into the 1996 track, complete with upbeat guitars and polished vocals. Bowman and band members Gavin Bennett and Miles Morris have managed to make the undeniably catchy song even more infectious. Whether you’re an avid fan of The Cardigans or have performed the “Lovefool” dance on TikTok, the Bad Suns version is sure to please.
“Lovefool” is the band’s first release since their 2023 EP Infinite Joy. Their debut album Language & Perspective recently turned 10, marked with celebratory sold-out shows in San Francisco, Chicago and New York City earlier this year. Now fans have another chance to see Bad Suns live as they hit the road with Finneas on his For Cryin’ Out Loud! Tour. In the meantime, listen to “Lovefool” here and find tour dates near you.
