Q&A: Twin XL Gets A Twist on "Slow Heart" from Smallpools

A BUOYANT, MUSICAL EXPERIENCE – is what properly describes Los Angeles based trio, TWIN XL. Their discography of up-beat tunes can amp up any playlist on a warm, summer day.

Comprised of skilled songwriters and producers, the band broke into the alternative-pop scene with their debut single “Good”, which was featured on their first album How to Talk to Strangers. This track caught the attention of many listeners and spent 5 weeks on the Billboard Top Alternative Songs Chart. TWIN XL has a knack for collaborating with notable artists to elevate their music. The group chose to take their recent single “Slow Heart” and work with bands - Smallpools and PVRIS - to create various remixes. Now fans have not only one but four versions to enjoy especially with live music making its way back.

Read more below to catch up with lead-singer Cameron Walker and his insight on recent projects and upcoming shows.

LUNA: First things first, how are you doing these days? How are you feeling about things opening up and live music becoming a thing again?

WALKER: I’m good! I’m so excited for to see live shows happening again. I’ve honestly been sort of easing myself back into “normalcy” as I found it a bit overwhelming at first but it really does feel like we are reaching some sort of light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

LUNA: I dig the Smallpools remix of “Slow Heart” and love how you allowed them to truly do their thing. What were your initial thoughts when you first heard the remix?

WALKER: Thank you so much. I’ve known Mike for a while and we are so fortunate that they were into the idea. I basically was just like “re-imagine the song as if you were making a Smallpools record” and that’s exactly what he did. I love that band so much and it was awesome to hear their take on it.

LUNA: Old or new, if you could remix any track out there and put your spin on it, what are you picking?

WALKER: Oh man, that’s a tough one. I think it would be cool to take like a Bee Gees record or something and just totally rock it out.

LUNA: How, if at all, have you seen your creative process change the past year?

WALKER: I think my creative process has changed drastically. I find myself much more patient and more interested in the journey of creating a song rather than the end result.

LUNA: Which track of yours are you most excited to play live soon?

WALKER: I think Lemonade will be a really fun up-tempo one to do live.

LUNA: The music video for “Slow Heart” is really well made and has a great narrative to it - are there any other visuals in the works right now?

WALKER: Thank you! I’m very proud of that one. The visual side of things has always been a really piece of our band. It’s rare that we put something out without some sort of visual. Aside from the music it’s my favorite part about what we do.

LUNA: What intentions do you have for the upcoming months?

WALKER: Right now we are really focused on writing and recording new music and so far I can confidently say it’s our best stuff yet.
