CARRYING AN OPEN HEART — Thomas Day is not afraid to let his aura fully bleed into his words. Crossing over from his initial breakthrough singing hypnotic covers on TikTok, Day is primed to share his story through music. Transforming heavy emotions into infectious pop balladry, Day unveiled his debut LP, Love Me For Another Day, on Oct. 27. Amidst the release, the singer continues to ride this high as embarks on the album’s self-titled tour, spanning across select cities in the US, including Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.

“This isn’t my debut album. Those words come with a lot of extra meaning, and I’m not there yet,” Day says on the atmosphere of the album. “This project is a collection of songs that I wrote and recorded when I was 18 and 19, trying to figure out the kind of artist I want to be. It’s a snapshot of my absolute bleeding heart, and I hope you can find some comfort and healing in these songs the way I did while making them.”

Across the project’s 10 tracks, Day channels his lifetime of experiences into a touching soundtrack for listeners struck by infatuation, heartbreak, and everything in between. From the simultaneously entranced and piercing “Masochist” to the pure selflessness of  “Come Home” — in which Day is appreciative of a past love interest in teaching him to let go of their past relationship — Love Me For Another Day encapsulates the entire relationship cycle.

In a conversation with Luna, Day dishes out insight on the process behind the project, his learning experiences in transitioning into songwriting, and his excitement about his first headlining tour. Read the interview below.

LUNA: How did you get your start in music?

DAY: I’ve been involved in music my entire life. I first started playing piano when I was three years old. My parents have always been musically talented, so they have been a huge influence on me and have really inspired the joy I find in music.

LUNA: Who were some of the artists who made the biggest impact in influencing your style?

DAY: I love John Lennon’s songwriting. In terms of more contemporary artists, I love Rex Orange County’s chord progressions, and I’m also inspired by artists like JP Saxe and Finneas.

LUNA: Noting that the tracks on Love Me For Another Day have been in the works since you were 18, which of the songs on this project signaled the start of where your identity came fully together?

DAY: I think that the songs “You Don’t Belong To Me,” “Stranger,” and “Masochist” really sum up how my mind works.

LUNA: When you started songwriting, what were the biggest hurdles you overcame in capturing the confidence to reveal your personal self in your music?

DAY: I think the biggest hurdle I had to overcome was accepting the things that have happened to me in the past in order to move forward with myself.

LUNA: Did your covers on TikTok also help in any way with figuring out how you want to present your vocals in your sound?

DAY: Actually, no, not really. I’ve always loved singing and performing cover versions of songs since I was a little kid.

LUNA: Through the process of creating the project, did you also undergo a shift in being collaborative with other songwriters and producers, or was this a skill you had in mind from your start as a musician?

DAY: I’ve been writing songs by myself since I was 10 years old, but while creating Love Me For Another Day I was able to collaborate with so many other creative and talented songwriters and producers who helped guide my mind.

LUNA: On this record, what are three particular tracks that fully represent yourself to listeners? How do you want your work to resonate with them?

DAY: I think “Stranger,” “You Don’t Belong To Me,” and “Love Me For Another Day.” I wrote this album not only for myself, but mainly for everyone else. I hope listeners find it almost like a therapy session.

LUNA: How excited are you for your first headlining tour? Are you looking forward to any possibility that it could provide new inspiration for upcoming music?

DAY: I’ve been dreaming of touring since I was a toddler. I think it could provide me new inspiration for my upcoming music, but if it does I want it to come to me entirely naturally.
