Q&A + Debut: St. Humain
BRIGHT AND BOLD - St.Humain's latest tune "Fever Vibe" has us groovin non stop. The Singapore born but now Sydney based artist is making "pop but not?" and it's difficult to resist. Listen to "Fever Vibe" below and get to know this up and coming creative artist.
LUNA: How has your background from Singapore and Sydney impacted you as an artist?
ST. HUMAIN: It's definitely made me more diverse. Growing up in Singapore, I listened to a LOT of mainstream music and by that I mean I was low-key obsessed with the pop charts. Sydney feels like it's got its own thing going and has made me think of the things I can do differently both musically and aesthetically... Well maybe being geographically so far away from everything has something to do with it!
LUNA: Do you find yourself having a common theme for writing?
ST. HUMAIN: I'm gonna do the cliché artist thing and say that I write about my life... But more specifically, I write from the emotions that are in it. I guess that's why I'm calling my EP "EMOTIONAL SAUNA" – I'm not super expressive as a person and I think my friends can testify. But these emotions stay within me... And I spend a lot of time processing things. Sometimes one feeling over months or even years. So writing songs is one way I try to make sense of it all, almost like a journal!
LUNA: Who are some artists you look to for inspiration?
ST. HUMAIN: So I've definitely mentioned her name before but I think Julia Michaels is absolutely fantastic and I get so inspired by her songs. Not just the stuff that she's released, but the songs that she's written for other artists too. I think she's so incredible. Frank Ocean is also a good vibe. He's created a world with his music that is so immersive and that is really inspirational to me.
LUNA: Where do you draw inspiration from for your visual aspect? Are you doing all of your visuals yourself?
ST. HUMAIN: I wish I could be super clear about this but often these things happen in my brain, ha! I go on these trails of thought regarding visuals and how I want things to look, and often it's tied to this feeling I can't describe, and only know it when it feels right. I do make some of it myself, but so far my cover art has been done by a friend of mine Carli Jeen, and have worked with other collaborators such as Jonathan Zerger Jason Denison and Nathan Hopkins!
LUNA: What do you want people to take away from your music?
ST. HUMAIN: I want people to feel more loved. I know that's a broad statement like Yeah you idealistic prick but I feel like if a song relates to you, it's like a hug. And hugs are love, right? Music is an amazing thing and I've definitely found solace in songs... I hope others can feel like they're heard and related to when they hear my music. Music is such an amazing connector of people and I want to rally ourselves that way!
LUNA: Can you tell us more about your debut EP EMOTIONAL SAUNA?
ST. HUMAIN: It's funny you ask that because I've definitely thought of the EP like a sample platter at Costco. You go ahead and have a taste of what it's offering and it's a good spread of different things. I think my EP is like that as well. The songs will be honest and real, there's one on there which is about how I like to just drive in silence sometimes because my internal thoughts are way too noisy. I hope lines like that connect and make people feel less alone... Sonically though it's sort of... Pop? I mean, it's got that pop backbone but there are so many other elements tied in as well. I can't wait for you to hear it in January!
LUNA: What's does the rest of the year have in store for St. Humain?
ST. HUMAIN: I've been busy in the studio working on more music because why stop right? The new stuff is really exciting and I'm doing my best to get better in so many ways – my vocals, songwriting, producing... Even my visuals. I produce other artists' work as well so I will be spending some time doing that. Been working with LX Mason and Sam J but I'll leave it up to them to share any news on their music. I'm also starting to get ready to take the EP live, which is exciting! Oh and talking a lot about my upcoming EP, so if you hear more about EMOTIONA SAUNA... Well you know it's definitely coming!
