LUNA: Welcome to SXSW, Sarah! How are you feeling?
KLANG: It's exciting! This is the first time I've been here with a label backing me. It feels more like work this time, but I'm still excited.
LUNA: What can we expect from your live shows this week compared to your usual ones?
KLANG: Usually I play with a full band, but this week I'll be doing some stripped-down sets with just me and my guitarist Bill. It'll be a bit different, maybe more like karaoke, but still fun.
LUNA: Even for people unfamiliar with your music, it'll be a unique experience.
KLANG: Definitely. Some songs will be stripped down, maybe less fancy but more fun.
LUNA: Do you feel boxed in when you're recording vocals in the studio?
KLANG: Absolutely. Live shows are different. There's adrenaline and you don't hear yourself as well, so you just go for it. In the studio, it's a longer process and you can overthink things.
LUNA: Your last project, Mercedes, explores more mature themes. You're a mom now, so it's a reflection on a new chapter. Sonically, it also has a lot going on. How does this project represent the evolution of your sound?
KLANG: All my albums build on the last one. I used to have a vintage pop sound, but I'm moving towards more rock elements, influenced by bands like War on Drugs. Touring a lot made me want music that feels more alive.
Writing-wise, I've always focused on my own life. When I got pregnant, I decided to make an album about it to keep myself busy. Being pregnant made me think about my 20s and teenage years. Becoming a parent, I thought I'd have it all figured out, but it's a constant process of self-discovery.
LUNA: What are your intentions for the upcoming months?
KLANG: I'm here at SXSW now, and summer touring starts soon with festivals in Sweden and Norway. I have a big show in London in September. I also just finished recording a new album and will be releasing new music soon.
