Q&A: Pizzagirl

RADIATING CREATIVITY AND AUTHENTICITY - both the charm of the music and persona of Pizzagirl makes him an artist hard not to fall for. Creating music as Pizzagirl, Liam Brown allows his love for film and the visual arts to make Pizzagirl a full audio and visual experience, letting him bring his ideas to life beyond the sonic end. Remaining candid and highlighting his desire to just have fun with his music, Brown’s online presence gives his listener an insight as to why his music always has a twist, and why each track is always unapologetically his. Read below to learn more about Brown’s influences, his plans amid COVID-19 and more.

LUNA: You’ve previously cited Mac Demarco, Grimes and Frankie Cosmos as musical influences, but are there any nonmusical influences that have shaped you as an artist?

BROWN: Yeah for sure! I think it’s really fun to find inspiration in everything in pop culture really, no matter how big or small. I love writing about anything, from my computer, a drive thru, a grocery store or all of the above!

LUNA: The video for “ball’s gonna keep on rollin” is really tight & definitely on the higher production end compared to some of your previous videos. Are there any plans for some more videos for tracks from first timer?

BROWN: The video for 'ball's gonna keep on rollin'' was really fun to shoot - it was for sure one of the most ambitious videos I had done at the time. I’d have loved to make a video for every song, but I’m positive the quality wouldn't have been as strong to tackle something like that. I love the visual side of music, so expect an unlimited amount of Pizzagirl movies in the future!

LUNA: Are there any creative areas outside of music you’d like to explore more?

BROWN: Yeah! I’m in love with film and I think it’s so important that visual art goes hand in hand with music too! I’d love to make a short film someday, and make the music for it, and explore other areas of creativity besides music - just keep my brain fresh!

LUNA: Festivals like SXSW are really important for up and coming artists like yourself - what can we (as fans and consumers) do to better support rising artists?

BROWN: I think fans and consumers have a very hidden power on rising artists that they may not directly know. Things like spending money to come to a gig or buying a t-shirt  if they have the money can be so important to an artist who is relying on this type of revenue to sustain themselves, even if it feels trivial at the time!

LUNA: I love your Instagram because it’s very “you” and allows your followers to understand your personality a bit more. What value do you think tapping into the more authentic side of social media has?

BROWN: Thank you! I feel very strongly about not creating this hierarchy online that an artist is somehow more valued online than a fan etc. I think the more candid you are about how you feel and what you’re getting up to and how engaged you are to someone who likes your art online, the stronger a world you build for yourself for people to want to be a part of!

LUNA: Big question so take it how you like - what intentions do you have for 2020?

BROWN: I think with all the implications of the coronavirus and the impact it’s had on the creative industry, it’s postponed a lot of plans that I know myself and many of my peers have had to look forward to! I think i’m just going to carry on sitting in my room making pop music which I’d love to share at some point, you’ll be hearing a lot from me online this 2020!
