Margo Looks on the Bright Side With Debut Single “Pink Vision”

ARRIVING TO THE INDIE SCENE — with a burst of positive pop personality, German singer-songwriter Margo’s debut single, “Pink Vision,” features an upbeat bubbly melody with hints of disco, exploring the feeling of desperately grasping onto those last few carefree weeks of summer. This feeling was only captured, however, in the wake of heartbreak.

The journey to her debut single began two years ago, when a then-20-year-old Margo had an unrequited crush. And though she sat at her piano writing a dramatic ballad about the all-encompassing, absolutely soul-defining feeling of love in your early twenties, she laughs about the experience now.

“When I finished the song, I came to the conclusion that, despite the drama, it's really fun to have a crush, and that I shouldn’t take it all too seriously,” Margo says. “So I thought that it would be a nice idea to turn it into a poppy, light summer tune.”

With the help of her producers, Friedrich Weiß and Ruben Seevers, further instrumentation was added to the track and the tone shifted. Now, instead of despairing over what she can’t have, Margo embraces the feeling of, as she puts it in the chorus of the single, “butterflies.”

“I want to turn negative feelings into a positive outcome,” she says, “because I think that's the fun and therapeutic part of songwriting, and it feels nice if people can connect with that.”

With the song finished, Margo began cultivating her visual style. Her aesthetics combine both the waves of ’70s and ’90s nostalgia that continue to sweep through the pop music scene.

“I love all of the ’70s legends, like Stevie Wonder and David Bowie,” she explains. Margo also takes lyrical inspiration from fellow UK singer-songwriters Arlo Parks and beabadoobee. The music video for “Pink Vision'' makes all of this inspiration visible.

Featuring olive green and pastel pink straight out of the ’70s and a DIY feeling from the ’90s, Margo creates a feeling of nostalgia from within the current moment.

The video features the singer-songwriter with a group of friends running, drawing, singing, and dancing all over Margo's hometown of Cologne. The second verse sees four of the group members spoof the Abbey Road album cover in an alleyway with pink hearts drawn across the ground. During the bridge of the song, the girls in the friend group take turns donning a pair of heart-shaped rose-colored glasses, giving each a turn to experience true “Pink Vision.” Carefree and lighthearted with awkward, goofy moments between the friends intentionally left in, it is impossible to feel anything but happy by the time the video ends.

Currently working on the video for her second single, “Astronaut,” Margo is characteristically optimistic for the future. “It’s been a long process to find the right people to work with,” she explains, “but now that I’ve got them it’s going faster.”

Her upcoming single continues the theme of an upbeat look at a negative situation, as it is a lighthearted pop song written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The song is about feeling like an astronaut alone in space,” Margo described.

She goes on to explain that the song focuses on the isolation of the early pandemic, combined with the aimlessness that comes with your twenties. “Sometimes you don’t know where to go,” she says. “You're just floating through space with no direction whatsoever.”

Margo continues to confront negative situations with her signature positive spin, happy to be able to share her songs with the world.

“Sometimes,” she says, “it's really fun to just enjoy music.”
