Q&A: A Journey 'through the self' opens up a path to finding little luna’s truest self

THE JOURNEY OF SELF DISCOVERY IS NOT AN EASY PATH- but it’s a journey worth going on to connect with your truest self. A journey that will open up gates of happiness, consciousness, and a life full of life-changing experiences. little luna shares her journey through her debut EP through the self. Where the art of her music meets the introspective experience of meditation. The EP consists of 5 tracks with the 6th track being a 25-minute guided meditation titled “forest”. As little luna takes the listeners through a journey of self-reflection, allowance to change, and empowerment, through the self is a phrase that came to little luna in meditation when she was, “... creating my vision board for 2021! it was the answer to my question: “how do i share my music with the world, in a way that is authentically me?”. loud and clear i received “you have to go through the self”. little luna is a singer-songwriter, yoga instructor, and wellness advocate who has been making music for two years, teaching yoga and meditation for seven and directs all her music videos. little luna’s signature touch to all her tracks is the yoga flows she creates to go with them. With this EP, little luna has created a yoga flow for each track. Each being 5-minute flows.

Along with the videos, she will be dropping a 30-minute yoga video, which will give you the option to flow through each song. Her previous single “last time” was featured on Alt 98.7 and made it Spotify’s “New Noise” and “Fierce Femmes" playlists. With her music, visuals, and fashion being influenced by the ‘70s, little luna stands out amongst the crowd with her image, and her unique take on music.

LUNA: Hey there luna! It’s great to meet you? How are you these days?

little luna: hi! thank you for having me. i am learning, and shifting, and growing! thank you for asking!

LUNA: Congrats on your debut EP through the self Can you tell us about it?

little luna: yes - this is my debut EP featuring 5 songs, with the 6th track being a guided meditation track.

LUNA: What made you want to connect your music with guided meditations and yoga? (which I absolutely LOVE by the way).

little luna: WOOOO !! i’m stoked that you’re loving them, thank you! i am first a yoga student, but have also been teaching yoga for 7 years. meditation is one way i really connect to my truest self, so for me they are such large parts of my life. i couldn’t not tie it to my music. the yoga/ meditation influences my music, and vise versa! i believe they are powerful tools that anyone could benefit from. so i wanted to make sure i was sharing these things that have positively influenced my life, in the hopes they will do that for others.

LUNA: Can you break down the creative process behind the EP?

little luna: it’s been around a year and a half process. so i’ll try to be concise, ha! i normally go into the studio with a song melody in mind, concept in mind, or original poem that i’d like to try building off of. every song on the EP except for “thief” was birthed out of that starting point, and co-written with Sierra Deaton. i usually give the producer some sound references, especially since i am very inspired by the early ‘70s; between that and the lyrics/concept/poem, we’ll start vibing from there. when i write i usually see a color, which later informs the color pallet of the music video that i direct for the song! if you check out my YouTube you’ll see that “last time” is burnt orange, “under the wave” is green, and “the glass” is purple. “thief” was actually written at a writing camp circa 2018-ish?, originally for another artist in mind. as i collected my EP songs, i knew that only i could tell that story, and my co-writers all agreed it could be on “through the self”. the producers Katie Tucker and Moises Zulaica then changed the production, and i brought in my violinist Allie Stamler and guitarist Luke Villegas, all to bring the sonics more into little luna’s world!

LUNA: Which song on the EP do you feel the closest with?

little luna: “roads”… can’t wait for you to hear it.

LUNA: How would you compare this EP to your previous work?

little luna: honestly i only started releasing music 2 years ago, so my original singles “shift & go” and “therapy” still very much so feel like me and the message i’d like to put out to the world: you are allowed to change, and what do you need to change in your life to re-connect with your truest self? sonically, i have more of an alt-pop ‘70s influence now, but lyrically i’m still in the same space.

LUNA: What drew you towards the ‘70’s aesthetic and what part about that era in fashion do you like the most?

little luna: my parents played so much music when i was growing up, all genres and eras, but one that always stuck out to me was ‘70s. when i think of the ‘70s i think of people leaning into their truest selves, and living from that space. not being people pleasers, which i am currently un-learning. not everyone of course, and it’s easy to look back with an idealistic perspective because i wasn’t there, but there is something about the culture that feels free to me, and my music is the main thing in my life that makes me feel “free”.

LUNA: Who inspires you both musically and in life?

little luna: i cannot pick favorites, so here’s a few! my biggest music inspirations sonically are: Bon Iver, Jefferson Airplane, James Blake, Fleetwood Mac & Etta James, and lyrically are: Stevie Nicks, Ashe, & Maggie Rodgers.

LUNA: Apart from yoga, what else brings you joy? (hobbies, your favorite anything?)

little luna: cruising Mulholland while blasting music in my ’66 mustang, and spending time at my favorite museums.

LUNA: Any other plans for 2022?

little luna: so many plans for 2022! a few being i am opening this summer for 5 Seconds of Summer, and am believing someone will ask me to go on another tour right after that! i am also already back in the studio writing new music, which i am having so much fun with! plus maybe direct a few more music videos from songs off of “through the self” ;). overall i just want to connect with and talk to as many little lunatics as possible, and keep re-discovering my truest self!
