Q&A: KILLBOY Welcomes You Into a World of Alt-Pop with new track "SPACE"

☆ BY Isabel Dowell

GIVING YOU THE ENERGY YOU NEED - KILLBOY’s newest single “SPACE” introduces you into their unique soundscape. This alt-pop punk princess has been releasing a steady stream of music all year long, with her most recent single being “I FUCK EVERYTHING UP”. Relatable. KILLBOY is a Mexican-American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, engineer, music video director, and visual artist, among many other titles.

She originally gained recognition back in December 2019 with her bedroom-produced single “WHEREDAFUCC”  and has been growing exponentially ever since. According to KILLBOY, “SPACE” is a track that “breaks down what all toxic girls actually mean when they say, ‘I just need some space’.” The upbeat melody contrasts KILLBOY’s somewhat sad, mellow tone of voice. These two factors really help push the emotions of this song to the forefront and allow you to feel them, and the song’s message, on a much more personal level.

It’s clear to see that KILLBOY is not stopping anytime soon. With a consistent release of new music, many upcoming shows being planned, and so much more in store, we will be seeing a lot more of her in the future. Read below to learn more bout KILLBOY and what she’s been working on.

LUNA: Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with The Luna Collective and answer some questions with us. We are happy to have you! How would you describe yourself and your music to someone who is just learning about who you are?

KILLBOY: Thank you for having me. I’m Killboy. I make music, it’s chill, it’s pretty dope.

LUNA: So, your next single “SPACE” releases on October 29. Can you elaborate on the meaning and inspiration behind this song?

KILLBOY: I wrote it for someone to explain why I get so mad when I tell them to leave me alone, and they actually leave me alone.

LUNA: This song is a bit more mellow than some of your previous singles you’ve released, what made you decide that now was the right time to release “SPACE”?

KILLBOY: It’s been on soundcloud private for 2 years. It’s never the right time, it’s just a song that I love.

LUNA: This song was written, recorded and produced by you, and along with all of those titles you are also an engineer, music video director, visual artist. It seems like you are a very DIY-artist overall. How do you feel this has helped you in your career thus far?

KILLBOY: Honestly, I just love cracking out on energy drinks and being alone and making music. It’s what makes me really happy. Also, it’s not like I was a kid with money or millions of followers when I started. So if I didn’t make my music no one would have ever made it for me.

LUNA: The title of the DIY-artist is one that is very sought after and people have a lot of pride in it, rightfully so, but have you run into any setbacks when it comes to being named as such?

KILLBOY: Maybe people don’t think I’m down to collab, but either way I just be making music. It’s only annoying when I have to keep track of all my files because I’m not a very organized person.

LUNA: Silly little question here, but anyone dead or alive that you could duet with, collaborate with, write with, etc., who would that one person be?

KILLBOY: Young Thug

LUNA: What can we expect to see from you in the future? Any secrets you are able to share with us?

KILLBOY: More music! I’m working on getting live shows lined up.

LUNA: Lastly, let our readers know where they can follow you! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer some questions! Congratulations on your upcoming release!

KILLBOY: Apple, Spotify, Amazon, everywhere. @killboy <3
