INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

☆ BY FAITH LUEVANOS

WITH THEIR FIRST RELEASE OF 2025, DJ/PRODUCER KIIMI – teams up with Denham Audio on energetic new single, “Know Your Name.” The London-based artist takes pride in their lyricism and brings the heat through collaboration with this new single that is sure to take over the electronic scene.

Not only is Kiimi a highly-skilled multi-faceted artist, but they’re also the creator of Hunni Sound, an online network designed to support and create a space for women, non-binary, and trans music producers. Through Hunni Sound, Kiimi has cultivated a safe, welcoming, and empowering space where underrepresented voices in the music industry can truly thrive.

Kiimi has gained a vast amount of recognition since their first release, from The Blessed Madonna to Jamie XX, and has been able to showcase their talents far and wide—all the way from London to Ibiza.

The Luna Collective received the opportunity to chat with Kiimi on their musical background, their evolution, “Know Your Name,” and more. Read the full interview below.

LUNA: As a classically trained musician, how did you break into the electronic scene?

KIIMI: My venture into electronic music started properly in lockdown. Over the years, I’ve done a lot of composition and sound design for visual media. In 2020 I was in a house share with friends who worked in 3D design, and while it was a weird time for a lot of businesses, there was a big boom in 3D and digital, particularly in fashion, as the world turned its focus towards sustainability and media that could be created remotely. I started working with them to create soundtracks for some of their projects. The briefs were very ambient and electronic-driven, so with that, my interest in electronic sounds grew, and the music I was making reflected that. After biting the bullet and sending some of my tunes to a music manager friend, he set me up with my first manager, and my debut releases came out on Hotflush a couple of months later.

LUNA: How would you describe the energy of your new single, “Know Your Name?”

KIIMI: To me, “Know Your Name” dances on a line between high-energy and sultry. I could listen to it both on the dancefloor and on the night bus home.

LUNA: What did the collaboration process look like for this track?

KIIMI: The session where we made “Know Your Name” was mine and Peri’s (Denham Audio) first time meeting in person, and the song came together really quickly and easily. We clicked well creatively and have been friends ever since - the process of releasing with him has been a dream!

LUNA: Do you hope for more collaboration in the future? If so, with whom?

KIIMI: Definitely! I would love to work with more vocalists and potentially rappers or spoken word artists. At the moment, I’m obsessed with Jeshi; I think working with him would be insane.

LUNA: Diving into Hunni Sound, can you explain what/who this network is intended for?

KIIMI: Hunni Sound is a network for women, non-binary, and trans music producers. Electronic dance music is (still) very cis-male dominated, specifically within the production realm, where less than 5% of producers identify as women and gender non-conforming. I wanted to play my little part in helping to shift the gender imbalance, and I felt the best way to do this would be to build a tangible community where people can meet each other, feel supported, and learn from one another. We’ve done club nights, socials, and in 2023 we launched a workshop series at Dalston Superstore. It’s been a great passion and source of inspiration for me, and I’m looking forward to relaunching it again soon!

LUNA: Since 2022, how have you seen your music evolve over the years?

KIIMI: I’d like to think my production and technical abilities have improved a lot since I started releasing music. My influences and inspirations are always changing, so it’s only natural for the sounds to evolve with them. When I first started creating, I resonated a lot more with breaks and garage, and at the moment, I gravitate more towards four-on-the-floor beats.

LUNA: What are some standout moments for you since beginning your career?

KIIMI: Playing at DC10 in Ibiza last year was a big highlight for me, also supporting Mount Kimbie at Roundhouse and Jungle at Koko. Selling out The Social for my debut live show was a huge moment too. I’m fortunate to have played some amazing festivals as well, like Lost Village, Hideout in Croatia, Glastonbury, Field Day…I also got the Capital Dance playlist with three of my recent singles, which feels like a milestone!

LUNA: What's next for you in these next few months?

KIIMI: I’m excited to say there is lots more new music to come this year. Watch this space!
