Q&A: Glove Welcomes A New Era With Tempting New Single “Chewing on a Wire”
FLORIDA POST-PUNK OUTPOST — Glove has released their latest single since their debut album, Boom Nights. With the release, the trio, composed of Justin Burns, Brie Deux, and Rod Wendt, also unveils the self-directed music video accompanying “Chewing on a Wire,” where they deploy an extensive use of primary colors to further the track’s agenda, pondering present and future, machine and man.
The new single, serving as a debut for the band as a three-piece following the departure of Michelle Primiani, the band’s previous 4th member, highlights a well-contained balance of synth, guitar, and Burns’ mesmerizingly strange vocal execution. As usual, Glove reiterates their unique nature as a band with no singular front person, ensuring each musical element blossoms and flourishes at the band’s discretion.
Compared to the band’s debut full-length, “Chewing on a Wire” leans more into the electronic elements of Glove rather than the more post-punk, experimental weirdness on the other end of the Glove spectrum. What remains as a constant is the band’s dedication to perfect a dystopian, ambiguous sound.
Read below as we catch up with the band on the new single, touring, and what’s new in the Glove world.
LUNA: Hello! How are we doing? What’s one song you’re currently obsessed with?
BURNS: "Distorsion" by Philippe Laurent or "The Left Bank" by Ryuichi Sakamoto (RIP) are both constants for me at the moment.
LUNA: Why the primary color aesthetic for this newest single, “Chewing on a Wire”? If you have to assign one primary color to each member, how would you designate that?
DEUX: We wanted something to visually communicate our transcendence into a new era. Color has always been a way to communicate sound. Rod is red because he’s a very passionate fire sign, Justin is blue because he is positive and so chill… I guess that makes me yellow because I’m a blend of the two personalities.
LUNA: I love the music video so much, and it’s self directed! What were some things that got included on the moodboard?
WENDT: Orchids, text design, and Kendrick Lamar.
LUNA: What was the initial idea that sparked “Chewing on a Wire”?
BURNS: About a year ago I had the words written, not even with the intention of using them for a song, but Rod showed me an instrumental demo he had been working on and the two just merged really well. We left it alone for almost a year, then it was remixed into a full electronic song. Compared to the original, [it] was very bare-bones and more organic with live drums and bass. We’re all super excited about how it turned out, and it coincides with our new chapter as Glove.
LUNA: Is Glove more futuristic or reminiscent?
WENDT: Present and future.
LUNA: If you could put together a dream tour lineup for Glove (alive or dead artists included), who would be on it?
DEUX: We would change the lineup daily, but I guess this wouldn’t be a bad place to start:
Paul McCartney, Cocteau Twins, Daft Punk
LUNA: What’s your favorite city to play when you’re on tour?
BURNS: For me, I always enjoy playing in Chicago. I feel like we always have pretty good shows there, but the answer is subject to change once we cross the pond in June.
LUNA: What do you look forward to the most for the rest of this year?
GLOVE: Oh, just being.
