Q&A: Edie Yvonne Brings Back Acoustic Pop With New Cover “No Rain”

EDIE YVONNE MIGHT BE A TEENAGER — but her musical idols go way back. Taking inspiration from acts such as The Beatles, Prince, and Britney Spears, the LA native is ready to bring acoustic music back.

Or, sort of, since Yvonne has also released more pop-sounding tracks such as “Girl Code,” “Darkness Bliss,” and her very first single, “With the Light.”

But these tracks feature acoustic instruments, reminiscent of Lana Del Rey’s homemade debut, Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant, in 2010.

Whatever direction Yvonne’s music will take, she is a promising young voice in the pop music industry. Luna was excited to sit down with the artist to discuss her latest track, “No Rain.” Read the interview below.

LUNA: Hi, Yvonne! Can you introduce yourself? How and when was your music career born?

YVONNE: Hi, thank you for having me on your platform! I’m a 15-year-old singer and songwriter from LA. I met the producer Douglas Boehm the summer before my 14th birthday. I had just started writing music and recording. Elaine Sir introduced us. He knew my favorite song is “Fade Into You” [by Mazzy Star] and we talked about various covers. “No Rain” was his recommendation. I leaned into it and followed his lead.

LUNA: How has your music changed in the past few years?

YVONNE: Well, it is still just the beginning. I think with each song there is more confidence and continuity of an approach of risk and experimentation. I’m just listening, learning, and finding my sound.

LUNA: Who inspires your music? Who are your biggest influences?

YVONNE: I love The Beatles. I love Prince. I love Britney. No Doubt, Mazzy Star, Lykke Li, Blondie. I am currently obsessed with Lola Young’s song “Conceited” and SkyeChristy’s single “Black Lake.”

LUNA: Could you introduce your favorite singles you've released so far?

YVONNE: The song I’m the most proud of is “Stain” — it is the most personal and vulnerable. “Queen Bee” was a blast to make. “Girl Code” set the tone for my mission and vision. I’m excited for the next singles, “Delusion,” “Duh,” and a cover of the No Doubt song “Sometimes.”

LUNA: How did you develop your style? Will you experiment with other genres in the future?

YVONNE: I hope so. Indie pop seems to be the tone I write in now.

LUNA: What inspired “No Rain”? How did it come to life?

YVONNE: It really was producer Douglas Boehm’s idea. And super interesting to slow down an iconic song and think about the lyrics through a new lens.

LUNA: Who produces your tracks? How do you choose which producers to work with? Do you have some dream producers you'd like to work with?

YVONNE: I am so lucky to have an ongoing collaboration with emerging producers Nicky Swedin and Cormac Liotta.  It is very collaborative. I met Rio Root, who produced “Girl Code,” through Roberto Mauser, who Diana Atri introduced me to. I hope to have the opportunity to work with him again. He is so supportive and brilliant.

And Doug. I feel really comfortable working with him, and even in light of all of his experience, he is open to my voice and input which I appreciate so much. He is wonderful to work with and has amazing ideas. I am so grateful to be able to work with him. I also hope to work with women producers in the future.

My dream would be to get to work with Dave Sitek when I grow up.

LUNA: In addition to music, what are your main focuses at the moment?

YVONNE: I am in high school full-time and make music after school, on the weekends, and during breaks. I also am an actress, and now that the strike is over I’m going out on auditions again. It is very very busy at our house.  There is  a short film I’m making a cameo in this spring.

LUNA: Have you ever been on tour? Would you like to embark on one?

YVONNE: Not yet. I’m writing and recording. I’m working on a couple of benefit shows in 2024. I hope to perform live more moving forward!

LUNA: Who's your dream feature?

YVONNE: If I may be so bold, Frank Ocean.

LUNA: Where do you see yourself in one year as a musician?

YVONNE: Having released an EP, writing a new album, performing live… Who knows what will happen — continuing to grow the audience, one person at a time.
