Preview: Our Pick's For Austin's Levitation Festival

As the end of October approaches, and things get spookier by the day, we also get closer to the beginning of Levitation Fest, featuring a plethora of genre-bending acts. Held the last weekend of October across many of Austin’s locally owned venues, Levitation Fest boasts a lineup perfect for an audience with an open mind to all things experimental, chill, and even a bit rowdy.

While the festival boasts a specialty in psychedelia, a wide breadth of sounds underneath the rock umbrella can be found, including garage, punk, R&B, math rock, indie, noise, roots, experimental, synthwave, psych, funk, and more. Levitation has curated a lineup that covers a lot of ground; from Andy Shauf (indie-folk pop) to Portrayal of Guilt (hardcore punk) and Thundercat (funk-soul-jazz bassist) there is something for everybody.

Like all good festivals, the age-old dilemma of the music festival goer is ever-present—when faced with a scheduling conflict of two bands playing at the same time, how do you decide which to see? Do they tour here often? Will one be overcrowded? Are they going to play more of their new stuff or the stuff you know all the words to? Which band puts on a better performance? They’re both awesome? Sounds like a good problem to have. And so it goes.

Fortunately, Levitation Fest doesn’t present itself with too many conflicts, with three of the main hosting venues within a stone’s throw of one another and a mostly staggered schedule. Even still, there are opportunities to choose between a few good options.
