Photo Diary : Never Not Amazed - Praying To The Aliens
☆ BY Grayson Keglovic ☆
Women are devised from another dimension and sent to earth to be worshiped in complete fidelity. A woman is as electric as a supernova. Captivating and powerful, you cannot shift your eyes away from her or shake her presence from your veins. Never Not Amazed - Praying To The Aliens is a visual representation of how it feels to put your faith in an asphyxiating extraterrestrial being: a woman.
A photographic collection by Canadian contemporary artists Abigail Claire and Emily Madeline, Never Not Amazed - Praying To The Aliens portrays the enthralling enigma that is a woman. Through film photography that is overlaid with a dreamy haze and gentle lighting, the twin sisters demonstrate how we often worship the unknown with wonder, envy, and desire.
“With the ethereal woman, it’s the concept of becoming so perfect that you’re beyond human,” Abigail Claire said. “We’re seen as aliens to a lot of people, especially men.”
Claire and Madeline create realism-style art to accentuate real-world topics they find important, often inspired by influential figures from their lives. Never Not Amazed - Praying To The Aliens was heavily influenced by English new-wave musician Gary Numan, according to their artist statement. Numan, an early artist and advocate for self-expression, was a frequent voice heard through the speakers of the two contemporary artists’ childhoods.
“Even though we are women and Gary Numan is man, we found his work extremely relatable,” Madeline described. “We can relate it to moments in womanhood and finding yourself in those moments.”
The pair’s portfolio consists of photography, sculptures, and paintings that highlight femininity and queerness. Claire and Madeline explained they are trying to make names for themselves in the feminist arts while creating art that is important and relatable.
