Photo Diary: Micaela Rebelo
FINDING THE BEAUTY IN HER NEW QUARANTINE ROUTINE - Micaela Rebelo has been building up her polaroid collection. Capturing moments and documenting a shifting moment in our lives, Rebelo has found joy in taking polaroids of her new life at home. Read below to view some of Rebelo’s moments in these times and learn more about her journey with photography.
LUNA: What do you like about shooting polaroids?
REBELO: I love shooting polaroids because of the instantaneous moments that I’m able to capture. Every photo I take has this feeling of nostalgia in an amazing way.
LUNA: How would you describe your visual aesthetic/style?
REBELO: I would describe my visual aesthetic as a sort of soft 70’s palette I always find myself trying to emulate the style of film even if I shot the photo digitally. I also love incorporating elements of nature into my photographs.
LUNA: Who are some of your visual inspirations?
REBELO: This is so hard but I think my top visual inspirations are definitely Sarah Heisman, Petra Collins, Jordan Tiberio and Larry Sultan.
LUNA: What motivated you to start shooting film?
REBELO: I started shooting film primarily after friends and family who knew I was interested in photography would gift me their old cameras that they no longer used (My polaroid was a gift from my aunt's closet!). Now looking back it was the best thing to have happened because there is nothing that matches the quality of film and being able to hold a tactile piece of art in your hands.
LUNA: How are you taking care of yourself during this crazy time?
REBELO: I’m trying my best to not go crazy at this time and take care of my mental health but it’s so hard! Half of the time I'm very motivated to do school work and finish up projects but then I get into funks where I just sit on the couch and eat trader joe's cookie butter while watching watch Tiger King.
I find that it helps me during this time to spend my energy on learning new things like sewing and baking (it's distracting and also very fun!) I also spend way too much time on Tik Tok watching cute farm animal accounts and thinking of the day I can buy my own minature pig lol.
