TAPPING INTO THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF FILM - photographer Cristina Garachana aims to highlight the effortless and endearing nature of film photography through her latest series with model Isha. Collaborating with makeup and hair artist Georgie Murtagh and stylist Georgie A. W., together the team created a look and feel that brings a sense of comfort while allowing your eyes to linger on the image, exploring the elegant nature.

Though originally from New York, Garachana’s time in London has sparked a love for fashion photography and a greater appreciation for collaborating with others in such a talented, bustling city. With the intent to keep learning, exploring and creating, Garachana is sure to continue to craft images that evoke emotion while showcases the talent of the entire team. Check out the photo series below and learn more about the shoot, her love for film photographer and more.

LUNA: What inspired the creative direction for the shoot?

GARACHANA: When planning this concept I knew instantly that I wanted it to be shot on film. When I see images shot on film, I see such an effortless beauty. You could say I was inspired by the feelings that film imagery transmits to me… When creating the mood-board I wanted to create imagery with very clean and natural styling whilst using a nude palette. I wanted the viewer to not be distracted by flashy colours or patterns… I wanted the viewer to view “natural” beauty. The natural beauty I see when I see a film image.

LUNA: What do you like about shooting film vs digital?

GARACHANA: I have always had an interest in film but had not had the opportunity to shoot in it until a recent editorial I had shot for Grazia Bulgaria on 35mm film. I decided to use the opportunity to try film photography and soon after realised just how much I enjoyed the whole process. I love the aesthetic beauty of a film photograph. I enjoy how it gives off a “natural” and “effortless” look. In digital photography, images can be quite sharp (unlike film which has a softer look) and depending how much retouching is done on the image the person within the image can look “artificial”. I enjoy the little imperfections of film that make it perfect to me. That is not to say I don't enjoy digital work but I do have a soft spot in my heart for film.

LUNA: How does the city of London inspire you as an artist?

GARACHANA: I actually grew up in New York, and have lived in Europe for some time now. I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to live in both the States and Europe, as I believe it has helped expand my overall perspective on life. In London I have found my love for fashion photography and have had many opportunities come my way. The city is a great stepping stone and full of possibilities. It is a city full of creative and inspiring people and I am grateful to be here amongst them.

LUNA: Can you share a favorite moment from this shoot?

GARACHANA: My favourite moment of this shoot was seeing everyone in the team excited and happy. Seeing the overall styling come together by the talented team and seeing our model's confidence blossom, whilst shooting, was the best part of this shoot. A photographer needs their team and having such talented people helping you convey your vision plays a huge part in the final results. Seeing everything come together is my favourite part.

LUNA: Where do you see the next couple of months taking you and your photography?

GARACHANA: I have recently gotten a studio space in North London and am excited as to all of the new work I will create in this space. I hope to continue to grow and learn. I feel that, as a photographer, you are constantly learning… Your work is constantly evolving... You need to push the boundaries and experiment with your work. I am unsure as to exactly how the next months will be but know that I will continue to work on my craft and know that new opportunities are coming. I always enjoy testing and producing editorial work and have some editorials on the way. I want to continue to meet and work with the talented individuals of London and expand my work within New York and Spain.

I want to thank The Luna Collective team for sharing my work and for this interview. I hope to continue to see this community grow and host an array of artists to share their story. In this industry, your team and community is vital. Thanks to them you are able to create and do what you love. So thank you.
