Now Listening: This Week's Tracks

STEVIE NEL - “without you here”

STEVIE NEL’s newest single “without you here” combines hauntingly poignant lyricism with a soothing synth sound that will leave you in a dreamy haze. This dream-pop ballad is perfect for your next late-night drive: roll the windows down and blast the charming vocals and soothing musical stylings of this St. Louis-based producer and songwriter. Dedicated to the concept of lost love, what this track does best is really bringing the listener into the center of the music. Listening to “without you here” makes you feel as if you’re really living the experience right alongside STEVIE NEL.

Surf Dads - “Last Night”

Surf Dads’ latest release, “Last Night” is the perfect tune for your next adventure with friends. Whether it be a trip to the beach or just a drive around town, “Last Night” is the type of song you’ll want to sing at the top of your lungs without a care. The powerful surf-rock elements and exciting choral lines will draw you into the fun-loving sound that Surf Dads best embodies. The band’s Instagram bio reads “we are having a nice time” and we can’t agree more - listening to “Last Night” is the epitome of having a nice time.

Mind Shrine - “Dance Around the Truth”

Mind Shrine reflects on relationships and honesty in “Dance Around The Truth.” The track opens with a dreamy guitar riff and bass that leads to, singer, Jess Howard’s precise vocals. Her approach is disaffected yet emotional at once while the arrangement grooves relentlessly, reminiscent of TOPS at their best.  A little over halfway through, the song strips down as singer, Howard, repeats “we don’t see eye to eye,” as if reaching an inevitable conclusion. The song picks back up with all players in full force.

“Dance Around the Truth” is from the Houston-based band’s second EP, Is It You? which contains more contemplative grooves.

Macarena - “Paradise”

“Paradise” by Macarena begins as a gentle song, full of meditative contemplation and ethereal vocals. The harmonious track recalls Macarena’s reflective days during the pandemic. In her creation of this alternative R&B single, she traces hidden and concealed parts of her life, as she now makes active decisions to slowly show more of her to herself and the world around her. Her wistful, elongated lyrics search for self-acceptance and their own paradise, sweeping listeners away as she sings “where will love go when she shows her face?”

“Paradise” takes a surprising turn when the drums and percussion drop almost unexpectedly. As her Erykah inspired harmonies continue behind the guitar flourishings of the track, Macarena shares with us just a few exciting minutes of her potential.

gcmayn - “arizona”

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter, gcmayn from Seattle, Washington, is back with his latest single “arizona.” The first song he wrote in nine months, the epic alt pop track embodies everything the singer has wanted to create. The nostalgic plot follows the “I hate myself” and “I hate my hometown” trope, with the addition of hating “everyone except this one girl, but she moved to Arizona,” hence the song title. The guitar intro will instantly have you hooked, and the conversational and confessional lyrics add an extra familiarity to the vocals. gcmayn’s heartbreak tale is sincere, melancholic, and full of euphoria at the same time.

THREEZERO – “One Call Away”

Lingering in the deep liminal space between attachment and moving on, THREEZERO’s “One Call Away” examines the need to be ever present for a past lover, despite intense feelings of jealousy and contempt. The track folds slow drum beats into a sultry atmosphere created with deep bass and smooth vocals. In collaboration with Rokkai, THREEZERO expertly laces feelings of anxiety and relatability through the track, exploring the increasingly complicated nature of human connection.
