Now Listening: This Week's Tracks
url - “woozy & lovesick”
url (pronounced Earl) has released the groovy and spellbinding “woozy & lovesick”. url is the moniker of Orlando’s Matt Bullard, or “sad boy supreme” whose career began taking off in 2019. Truly living up to its title, “woozy & lovesick” toys with discordance, psychedelia, and culminates into a funk-driven bedroom pop track. Glittered with vibrant synths and an undeniably groovy baseline, “woozy and lovesick”, at its core, is an emotive single about falling in love. With his upcoming debut EP on the horizon, the “woozy & lovesick” is an exciting and fascinating look into what url has to offer. And if it is a precursor of what’s to come, you’ll want to keep an eye out for more url.
Sam Wood - “FYI”
Sam Wood’s bass seems to be grooving in the sadness of its owner. “FYI,” the latest single from the upstate New York singer, tackles a familiar feeling we’ve all encountered in our lives: moving on. The path toward any new direction is unclear, leaving us lurking - anxiously - in the mist of what’s to come. But, when it comes to letting go of a past relationship, the person who walked out the door seems to haunt you. Sam seems to notice the haunting presence left from his ex, and can’t help but think about them. The song is an acknowledged pity party yet it’s probably the only one that has a proper tune for it. Once the song gets into your ears, you can feel the infectiousness of its sound pulling you in for another listen. It’s a feeling Sam has captured, perfectly, about the pull a lost love can have on you. I’m happy he left it all on the track, giving us the perfect song to bust a move to while a few tears decide to reminisce on lost times with someone. Maybe later “FYI” can be something Sam can dance to, as well.
girlhouse - “happy now”
Recorded in the basement of a frat house in Nashville, “happy now” is the latest release of indie artist, girlhouse. The track is a breezy exploration of indie-rock aesthetics coupled with the relatable lyricism of girlhouse. "happy now is about trying to make someone else happy at the expense of your own mental health,” states girlhouse, and this sentiment is carried out in the reflective tone of the single. “happy now” is a classic indie-rock track that is reminiscent of beabadoobee and Soccer Mommy, however, it manages to maintain girlhouse’s fresh and youthful take on the genre. With the stirring the girlhouse EP, girlhouse (a.k.a Lauren Luiz) has been an understandable favorite and received coverage from EARMILK, La Blogotheque, BBC Radio 1, and more - and this latest single falls part of her impressive discography. Definitely one to watch and an easy addition to your library, “happy now” is the slice of indie-rock heaven you’ve been waiting for.
BAD CHILD - “Royalty” (No Love For The Middle Child Remix)
Singer/ songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, BAD CHILD, is back with the “Royalty” remix. The original track is described as “wanting too much and becoming enveloped in greed.” The latest remix is intensely ominous and swelling, more so than the original. The release of the track is accompanied by a mesmerising visualiser illustrating the lyrics and showcasing the gothic, dark elements of the track. The lyrics are unashamedly confessional and yet retain a hint of mystery.
BAD CHILD’s eccentric music and unique vision has stuck with him from the start of his career with his musical debut “BAD CHILD” and “Payback”. He offers a hybrid-alternative sound that borrows from rock, hip-hop and dance influences, and his eclectic inspirations shine through on the latest “Royalty” remix.
Summer Rain - “Hold Her Hand”
Canadian indie-rock trio Summer Rain, composed of Will Mclelland (guitar/ vocals), Josh Beausoleil (bass/ vocals), and Logan Hale (drums), exude authenticity in their new track “Hold Her Hand”. It’s organic and authentic, recalling troubled relationships in an exuberant way. The three-piece have a captivating sound and style that they describe as inspired by bands such as Coldplay and Oasis, and yet still maintain their own unique approach to music.
From the title “Hold Her Hand”, the song feels melancholic, as if the singer is mourning and reflecting on the ever growing distance between his loved one. In spite of the sadness, Summer Rain strike the right chords with distortion and up-tempo rock and roll to perform the way rockstars do. Their accompanying music video features picturesque sceneries with dusky skies and cherry blossoms in the background, adding to the innocence of the song’s lyrics. The song’s instrumentation includes punchy drums and refined vocals that provide a sweet and sublime layer to the track. There is certainly a sense of yearning and sadness to “Hold Her Hand” which leaves listeners intrigued for more.
Maisyn - “Pool Party”
“Pool Party” is the latest single from Maisyn - launched by Los Angeles based indie pop rocker Jessi Mason. A tour-de-force within the alternative scene, Maisyn brings a melancholic introspection to her music, one that dives into our emotional and mental wellbeing with complete honesty and vulnerability. Within “Pool Party,” Jessi Mason explores the effects that body dysmorphia can have on an individual, the discomfort they feel within having to show their skin. It stands for itself as an unapologetic, yet relatable anthem - coming at a time when we probably need it the most. With her strong lyrical melodies and breathtaking instrumentation, Maisyn and the single place themselves in the ranks of Lorde and Phoebe Bridgers.
Danny Mellin - “His Favourite Sweatshirt”
Young love provides a particular anthem, and Danny Mellin has captured it on “His Favorite Sweatshirt.” When you press play, let the indie riffs cozy you in for what’s to come as the catchy storytelling keeps your ears glued - all the way - to the last second. The fast, passionate tempo of the song reflects the pounding emotions fueling young love through each new day, especially when young lovers part hands. The main guy in the song, the protagonist, is consumed with jealousy about a new guy, getting to speed around town with his ex, as he struggles with the memory of the girl. “It’s an unusual view of the heart-breaking challenges of young love I suppose. I love the wonderfully petty reason he [the guy in the song] consoles himself with,” Danny has said about this new rhythmic journey he has taken us on. Throughout the song, you can hear the satisfaction in Danny’s voice, as well as in the production of it, that this story can spend time in our lives. I wonder which story of young love this song will fuel next?!
Mothé - “Summer's Almost Gone”
“Summer’s Almost Gone,” is a track produced by up-and-coming non-binary artist Spencer Fort, also known as Mothé. With the intent to literally bring summer to a close, this track lays down atmospheric instrumentation with the air of nostalgia to capture how we all feel when autumn slowly approaches us. At its surface, “Summer’s Almost Gone,” is an indie pop bop, but slowing down around the three-minute mark, its guitar-heavy bridge and outro bring an anthemic, stadium-rock energy to compliment the chilled groove found earlier throughout the song. It is easy to see how Fort is a master at this technique, having played piano as a classically trained musician during their youth. They even started their own independent record label in March 2021, called Slowlab Records. We definitely cannot wait to see what else they do, as we are sure we will be hearing more about them real soon.
