Now Listening: This Week's Tracks
Creature Canyon - “Faded Fire”
Just in time for summer, Creature Canyon is giving us all a taste of sunny San Diego with their new indie/alternative rock track “Faded Fire.” Though brand new, the song already feels like an indie playlist staple with really strong musical ideas, particularly in the electric guitar and vocal lines. Sonically, the song is comparable to bands like Young the Giant and Foster the People, which may be explained by the stacked team of producers and engineers behind it including Christian Lum (Private Island), recording engineer Mike Schuppan (Foster The People, Young the Giant), mixing engineer Jordon Silva (Vance Joy, The Avett Brothers) and mastering engineer Brian Lucey (Cage The Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, The Black Keys). Though there are no plans for a project announced at the time, we can only hope Creature Canyon will ride the energy of this new single throughout the year.
boywithahalo - “signs”
Finding a unique lane in indie/alternative rock is becoming increasingly difficult in a saturated music industry, but boywithahalo continues to do so with their single “signs.” The self-produced song is the latest in a string of singles leading up their upcoming project, innerspace, and is a brilliant example of juxtaposition between a seemingly upbeat instrumental and eerie, introspective lyricism. Perhaps the most distinct part of the song’s composition however, is the whisper-like main vocal line whose slight dissonance helps create a raw, honest look into the artist’s mind. Regarding what we can expect next, innerspace will continue to use introspective lyricism to speak on the artist’s adolescent struggles with mental health and suicidality.
ANITA- “Routine” (Put it Down)
If you like to keep your ear to the ground for up-and-coming R&B talent, look no further than ANITA’s newest single release “Routine (Put it Down).” The song features TRAPSOUL-esque production, sensual lyricism, silky-smooth melodies and strong vocals akin to artists like Justin Skye and H.E.R. The new single is only ANITA’s second release ever, proving to be a strong start for the brand new artist. R&B fans everywhere should give the track a listen and should certainly count ANITA as an artist to watch.
MIXIE - “sideways”
Simply put, MIXIE can do it all. The model, digital artist, fashion designer, and musician’s newest release of “sideways” details her life’s current issues on a perfectly paced dance beat and hypnotic guitar lines. MIXIE’s “sideways” is an easy indie pop track, expanding her own range and putting an exclamation mark on the levels of multidisciplinary talent that comes out of her mind… even when her vices knock it “sideways”.
Kowloon - “Today”
Evoking the psychedelic bliss of 60’s guitar riffs, Kowloon’s “Today” hits a perfect pocket of rock that is both reminiscent of the past and refreshingly new. Mixing themes of love and catastrophe with whispered falsettos and muted drums, “Today” is a hazy indie trip that rides on its expressive guitar chords straight to a sonic paradise.
CAITLIN - “Take Me Out”
Indie-pop artist CAITLIN just released her second single of the year with “Take Me Out.” As the New Zealand based artist delves into the genre, she cites artists like Julia Jacklin, Faye Webster and Spacey Jane as her influences. The similarities are there — CAITLIN’s unique lyricism and strong melodies make her a stand-out musical artist too. On “Take Me Out,” she brings a new and playful perspective to a song about a relationship. It’s not a toxic relationship, but her own toxicity and “red flags” that she chooses to call out. Look out for new music and an EP from CAITLIN this summer.
Public Circuit - “Only In My (Dreams)”
“Only In My (Dreams)” is a two-minute track with racing synths and bass lines — capturing the rapidity and dizziness of existing in a dream state. Grappling with the fleeting nature of a dream, Public Circuit ruminates on the moments and memories lost to reality. The new-wave artist stacks layers of instrumentals in an unexpected way, as if they are trying to recreate the spontaneity and fervor of a dream too. With influences such as New Order and Black Marble, Public Circuit is a promising new-wave act. Their sophomore EP A New Idol is slated for release this summer.
Lyra’s Orchid - “See You There”
Four-piece group, Lyra’s Orchid have released their second single “See You There” and it’s sure to find a spot on your playlist. Comprised of Laura Netting (Vocals/Bass), Jack Woolcomb (Guitar), Ed Perkin (Guitar) and Lewis Bradshaw (Drums), the band is split between Newquay and Bristol, using Cornwall’s dramatic coastline as inspiration for their songs. “See You There” was recorded in Humm Studios Bristol by the band and produced by drummer Lewis. It houses the creativity for the group's music it doesn’t limit them and the comfortability of having your bandmate produce is always refreshing.
“See You There” has an upbeat Surf Rock feel, featuring reverb-laden guitars, driving bass and drums, and catchy vocal lines. You can feel it vibrate through your bones. It’s a feeling that is always timeless in its own way
The band released their debut single in March, gaining a following on Reddit’s r/listentothis community and being shared by curators like David Dean Burkhart and BIRP!
There are more singles to come in the following months as well as an EP release at the end of the summer. The band is also hoping to play the tracks live this summer so if you want to hear some fresh new music this is the band you would want to see.
Andreas Kaufman - “A Stranger”
Through the vibrations and groovy beats, Andreas Kaufman’s newest single “A Stranger” which came out on June 15th evokes a soulful experience throughout the entirety of the recording, the warmth that comes off of this song keeps it fresh and exciting, it feels as if it is natural. The harmonies grace the ears while the music takes you on a cosmic soulful ride with the lo-fi hip hop intro into a funky bass riff with a melodic synth sound. As Andreas Kaufman leads with relaxed but fully in control vocals with a catchy melody that keeps the listener wanting more. You can see the influence of multiple groups in this song which in some ways makes it timeless. This is a song that shouldn’t be slept on by any means, if you’re looking for music that has a groove to it then look no further. This shows that Andreas Kaufman is always changing and evolving as a musician, there is growth and maturity in this song that stands out, the musicianship is there and the vibes are on point.
