Now Listening: This Week's Tracks

smythy - “turn back time”

Ever wanted to feel like you were the main character staring out the window of a car in a coming-of-age movie? Well, “turn back time” by smythy can make you feel just that. Hailing from Ireland, indie pop artist Andrew Smyth is here to break into the global music scene. His latest single, “turn back time” illustrates the journey of two former lovers taking a road trip together, wishing to bring back their lost love. While it may sound melancholy, smythy fills the track with dreamy synths and hypnotic guitar licks, creating a song that won’t leave your head. Fans of artists like Dayglow and Wallows will love the driving rhythms and lyrics that smythy has to offer. With “turn back time”, smythy is quickly creating his place in the indie-pop lineup, and we can’t wait to hear more.

Bennytheghost - “Tightrope”

What do you get when you put a songwriter and producer in a room for two hours? Just the indie-pop song of the summer. Bennytheghost is back with his latest single, “Tightrope” and it’s going to be hard to get this track out of your head. The two-minute bop was created in a whirlwind. Bennytheghost and his collaborator Cooper found themselves creating “Tightrope” in just two hours, and after weeks of tweaks and remixes, they realized that the original demo was the winner all along. The peppy beat and melodic bass line are catchy enough to get any listener hooked, but the real magic is in the intoxicating lyrics of the track. The chorus even offers an intense guitar breakdown adding a nice touch of juxtaposition that sets the song apart from being just another pop track. “Tightrope” will be an easy add for  your indie rock summer playlists this year.

Kristiane - “Cry Baby”

Kristiane has always been an artist-driven by storytelling, and her latest single, “Cry Baby” is no exception. After hearing the instrumental track her producer Cooper Holzman had created for her, she immediately made her boyfriend pull their car over and began writing. 15 minutes later and we have this beautiful single, “Cry Baby”. The sonic elements of the track pair seamlessly with Kristiane’s dreamy vocals and sense of lyricism. After many years of not letting in love for the fear of losing it, Kristiane finally understands what it takes to experience and enjoy love. “Cry Baby” outlines the intensity of a love where your universe is intertwined with another. The track has elements of more early 2000s pop ballads but still sounds refreshingly modern. “Cry Baby” is the first single off of her upcoming project and sets the tone for what we’ll see in the future. For fans of artists like MUNA and Wallice, you'll love having Kristiane on your radar.

DAISY - “HUBBA HUBBA”

The Los-Angeles based band DAISY release new single, “HUBBA HUBBA,” a grabbing piece full of elements that flow smoothly throughout the track. The track brings a sense of warmth throughout the track as the vocals of Daisy Hamel-Buffa lure you in and take you through the adventure of their sound. It’s a track you feel all around and genuinely let it manifest into something beautiful for you. “HUBBA HUBBA” is about feeling yourself and everything around you while keeping a keen eye on someone special. But with crushes, we never know what’s going to happen and that mystery is motivating throughout the track. “HUBBA HUBBA” is a staple for the hopeful feeling of spring and summer.

Triathalon - “Spin”

Triathalon never fail to disappoint with bringing in something so sweet and touching. “Spin” starts off with a slow and steady beat but as the vocals seep in and different elements weave themselves in – you get to experience the song. Triathalon are known for their bedroom pop, indie and alternative genre blending but in this track we get to hear them try out more psychedelic elements. “Spin” is everything we need right now – a track that sits itself in your mind where you can’t stop thinking of it, humming along to it and swaying along to it. It’s the perfect track as we enter sunnier days and calmer feelings.

Thornbraver - “This Is What She Does to Me”

“This Is What She Does to Me” is Thornbraver’s newest track and we cannot get enough of the sound. It’s hopeful in tone and the flow is smooth and seamless that you’ll be putting the track on repeat after the first listen. The track touches on entering more emotional and intimate territories when speaking about old loves to new loves. It’s a different way of understanding the other and letting your new love get a glimpse of life before them. Thornbraver encapsulates that feeling of relief of being able to be so open while also the nervousness behind it. The instrumentals on this track blended with the vocals are encouraging and sweet – a comfort in song form. With this track being released, we’re excited to see what Thornbraver has in store with their first full EP coming out May 20th.

Kabinett - “Blueberry Lips”

There are many words to describe this new track, “Blueberry Lips,” but the most important one is groovy – in a non-cringey way. The elements flowing in this track are ones to get you up on your feet and letting the instrumentals control you. It’s full of energy before turning into a questionable track with the lyrics and ending in chaotic flow but I think that’s what makes it special. It feels like an adventure and it’s not meant to be so clear to listeners. Maybe it’s a love song, maybe it’s about a crime, maybe the narrator is just weird but Kabinett does a great job at making the track packed with unique flow and energy. Listen to Kabinett’s newest track and stick around to the end for a saxophone solo that feels like tying the ribbon on the track – you won’t regret it.
