Now Listening: This Week's Tracks
Wallows - “At The End Of The Day”
Wallows is gearing up for an exciting 2022 with the release of their latest single “At The End of the Day”. The trio is creating a rich and unique sound leading up to their sophomore album, Tell Me That It’s Over. As a fan of their first album, it’s refreshing to see Wallows continue to create tracks that are evolving with them. “At The End Of The Day” starts out as a light and bouncy electronic track. It’s reminiscent of those classic 80s movies where a couple is driving in a ridiculously large car without a care in the world.
Wallows brings us back to reality as the song opens up to reveal the details of a doomed relationship. The band perfectly balances upbeat, nostalgic electronic beats and loops with an effortlessly light melody throughout the track. It makes for a lovely listen with major earworm potential. The group sticks to their indie roots as an indie group by adding layers of droning guitars and punchy drums. Put it all together and you get an effervescent song that transports you to simpler times. “At The End Of The Day” feels like a natural progression from their debut album and latest EP, allowing Wallows to really explore what sonically makes them stand out.
Be on the lookout for Tell Me That It’s Over set to release on March 25th.
Jeshi - “3210”
Literally and figuratively, Jeshi’s latest release “3210” sees creativity spilling from the estate in a photo flip-book, zoopraxiscope style. As he celebrates UK Garage and revels in British culture, the new rave-inspired single showcases epic visuals that align with, and elevate, his clever lyricism and bouncy sounds.
Jeshi is full of charisma as always, and the Will Dohrn-directed music video paints a sincere snapshot of his London hometown, from tube maps, passersby, and background skylines. The artist has an authentically unique vision, and on this track, we truly see him break out of orbit. Jeshi’s debut record, Universal Credit, is out May 27.
Anna Shoemaker - “Until I Die”
Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and producer Anna Shoemaker offers luscious, breathy vocals and intoxicating alt-pop melodies on her latest single “Until I Die.” From her recently-released debut album, Everything is Fine (I'm Only on Fire), Shoemaker indulges in confessional tales that capture the tumultuous charm, and introspection of young adulthood. “Until I Die” is the opening track on the record, and waits no time to kick in with its pulsing drums and slamming guitar. If you want a sweet introduction into Anna’s darker indie style, this is the song to begin with.
As she rocks out and mesmerizes viewers with her studio-filmed music video, the singer shows herself in complete control of her path.
roman around - “DNT”
Kicking the track off with some vibey instrumentals before getting into a groovy melody, roman around brings you all the vibes you need to start your week off right with “DNT”. The California-based artist uses their music as a way to channel their experience as a non-binary and pansexual creative in an ever-evolving world. Bringing in their Mexican and Native American heritage, roman around explores a variety of sound scapes and references within their music.
roman around shares, “‘DNT’ started as a demo in April of 2021. I was using it as a project to design synth sounds and create random drum loops. It wasn’t intended to go anywhere, but when some friends heard it they became attached to the creation and encouraged me to finish it."
“DNT” serves an incredible addition to the growing artist’s discography while truly showcasing their vulnerability and skills as a song writer. Make sure to keep roman around on your radar and stay tuned for what’s next.
Soran - “Way Up”
Rooted in vulnerability, Soran’s powerful new release “Way Up” offers an insight into his personal struggles. The Montreal-based artist masters storytelling as he works through the grief of losing a loved one. The spirit of Soran’s mum is alive and channeled in his music, as he explains: “It’s ironic, because I’m doing all of the things that she wanted me to do now, but she’s gone. It sounds like me, yet so much of it is my mom. I find a way to celebrate her in every song.”
The singer indulges in alternative R&B, lo-fi and spacey electronics, and evocative, buttery soft vocals. “Way Up” is fueled by Soran’s courageousness, providing a deep sense of hope for listeners going through their own tribulations.
Sir Chloe - “Mercy”
Luring you in with her sweet, sultry vocals, it doesn’t take long for Sir Chloe to take you into her world with “Mercy”. Layering heartfelt lyrics with a seemingly simple though endearing vocals, “Mercy” brings in an edge of energy as the track builds upon itself. Produced by GRAMMY Award-winner John Congelton, “Mercy” lets us into a more garage rock side to the New York-based band. Making their Atlantic Records debut, the band is keeping a busy pace and is currently on tour supporting alt-J and Portugal. The Man, and will kick off their first headline North American tour on May 6 at New York’s legendary Bowery Ballroom. If “Mercy” serves as any insight to the band’s upcoming album, we’re all ears for what soundscapes the band will explore, and we’re excited for the energy they’ll be bringing.
