Now Listening: This Week's Tracks
By Astrid Ortega & Isabella Vegas
FLOWVERS - “Throwaway Generation”
Throughout history, a title track on a body of work seems to set the tone for the rest of the work. In their new track, Throwaway Generation, which exudes an infectious nostalgic-yet-chill vibe, FLOWVERS makes a statement not just about the state of the world, but about the state of their artistry. The track heavily features the production and instrument skills of the band, with voices that feel as if you can sink into. The four piece behind FLOWVERS came together in 2016 as a ground of teenagers who make songs inspired by the 80s and 90s. Their new EP, Throwaway Generation, takes influence from artists throughout those decades while still maintaining refreshing. The cover of the EP is reminiscent of the fish-eye cover style used by legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Harry Styles, and The Beatles, which each seem to fit their sound perfectly, as they mark the close with.
Abbie Ozard - “Crocodile Tears”
“An underlying melody disguised in surrealist humor,” Abbie Ozard, the Manchester-hailing star of the current indie pop scene, returns to her roots in her newest released, Crocodile Tears. The song, which features Ozard’s already-bored-of-you tone matched with deeply heartfelt lyrics, has an upbeat personality as this artist comes into her own. The accompanying music video for this song had me in a laughing fit, showing that while she is a pop star with an incredibly future ahead of her, Ozard knows that the key to relating to an audience in order to build a lasting fan base is to not take yourself too seriously, and to be your most genuine self is how people will grow to love you. The track itself is a follow up to Ozard’s EP, Growing Pains, which was highly acclaimed.
Bleach Day - “bbs in the grass”
“Bbs in the grass” starts off with a small piano melody, building up into the percussion, the bass, and a Wurlitzer. The song embodies what Bleach Day is, soft music but creative and unique to them. It’ll remind you of warmth, but also remind you of the days to come, the feeling of being in the moment, then looking back at it and being like, “Yeah… that was great.” Bleach Day will release their new album, as if always, on March 6th, mixing golden age pop, cinematic progression, and their unique tunes. It’s meant to take you through a story of growth and self-discovery. “Bbs in the grass” gives you a taste of the new album and we’re excited to see more of Bleach Day’s sound.
Dan Bereza - “Starchild”
This self producing Vancouver artist is bringing attention to his music with his new single, “Starchild.” With only a handful of singles out, “Starchild” shows the sound Dan Bereza is pursuing. The song is a psychedelic groove, bringing you a unique sound to get you up on your feet. The song starts off with a vintage sounding tune, bringing in the instruments and vocals, Bereza also has his girlfriend on back up vocals. It’s full of good energy, mesmerizing that you’ll keep listening, attaching memories to remember good things with a good song.
