Now Listening: This Week's Tracks

New Islands - “Moments In Time”

“Moments in Time” opens with sweet jangly guitars, bendy distortion and youthful backup vocals. It truly brings you back to elementary school music class in the best way possible. Throughout the track, New Islands asks us to remember all of the precious moments we’ve experienced and how they helped make us into our current selves. It’s a dreamy, guitar-filled tune that whisks you away to some better times.

New Islands is the bedroom pop project of producer and songwriter Juan Carlos Virgen Jr. His tracks have been welcomed with open arms in the bedroom pop scene and he continues to create youth-filled singles for use to enjoy. “Moments in Time” is one of those tracks that you would put on to dance around in your kitchen. New Islands knows how to bring us back to the dreamy and carefree snippets in life. “Moments in Time” is the third track of New Islands’ upcoming EP Nostalgic Avenue, out January 7th.

Elephant Castle - “Quicksand”

Elephant Castle’s “Quicksand” is a sweet melodic track that completely covers you in a breeze full of comfort yet excitement. It’s a smooth energetic track full of elements that grab you in every second. It’s got a 60s organ and a piano melody that’s eccentric — a perfect balance and a great description of Elephant Castle’s sound.

Elephant Castle - the retro-inspired indie rock project from Los Angeles-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Danyew, is something to keep an ear out for. Every fragment of Elephant Castle takes you into a world of endless charisma and charm.

Allegories - “It’s A Parade”

Allegories’ latest single, “It’s A Parade”, is just that - a parade! With it’s fragmented acoustic instruments, dazzling synths, and layers of breakbeats, the track feels though it is taking you through an audible amusement park. The sharp static intro quickly divulges into a sweet indie pop melody paired with haunting vocals akin to Matt Berninger. The beautifully processed eclectic track’s pace quickens and falls with an oxymoronic ebb and flow, which smoothly crashes as the song fades away. Reverb filled “It’s A Parade” provides a portal to a nostalgic future, where listeners are free to dance, yearn, scream, and float.

The Vaniers - “Dance To Forget”

Looking for some new indie rock that reminds you of the classics? Then look no further than The Vaniers. Their latest single “Dance to Forget” feels like an ode to The Strokes mixed with the flair of a modern alt-rock track. Rhythmic guitars and riffs follow the simple yet catchy vocal melody throughout the song. The drums drive the track along without being overbearing. “Dance to Forget” has all of the elements of that classic early 2000s alt-rock that we all know and love. And, it’s hard not to smile and tap your foot along when the upbeat intro of the track comes on.

Hailing from Toronto, The Vaniers are on the move to break out of the underground Toronto rock scene any day now. “Dance to Forget” is the fifth song in a stream of singles from the rock trio. The group recorded their first full-length album in 2021 and we are just waiting for it to drop for some more indie rock goodness.

Elison - “Hopes & Horoscopes”

Indie rock duo Elison from Des Moines, Iowa are back with their second release “Hopes & Horoscopes.” On lead vocals, Marissa wistfully sings of bad habits she can't seem to shake, behind a synthy guitar-driven melody. A mixture of melancholic lyrics and playful indie drum beats see the duo touch on comparisons and missing people they’ve never met.

The soft harmonies between Marissa and Scott blend seamlessly and sweetly. The addictive twangy riff that pops up continuously throughout the track is a great addition, lingering in your head long after the song has finished. With satisfying guitar flourishes and strong vocals that are equally delicate, this track is a great taster of what’s to come from Elison!

Seasonings - “Friends”

With bright melodies and deeply emotional lyrics, Seasoning’s latest single “Friends” captures the loneliness felt while yearning for those closest to you. The repeated “only thing I miss is my friends” is a simple, yet incredibly vulnerable statement to be made over such beautiful guitar riffs in the chorus. The soul member of Seasoning, Lachlan Buckle, partnered with director Jack Cassidy to create a visually striking music video to coincide with “Friends”. The enthusiastic color palette of yellows, blues, reds, and greens, paired with nostalgic film overlays, provides the viewer with an exemplary subliminal visual representation of the emotions Buckle has threaded through the track. Easily danceable and certainly relatable, “Friends” is bound to strike a chord with audiences in one way or another.
