From The Road: Rainbow Kitten Surprise
INTERVIEW
INTERVIEW
TOURING IS A WHIRLWIND, BUT FOR RAINBOW KITTEN SURPRISE, THE MAGIC LIES IN THE MOMENTS - both onstage and behind the scenes. Last fall, the band embarked on an unforgettable journey, performing in iconic cities, connecting with fans, and even making music on the road for the first time. From the energy of their first arena shows in Raleigh and Charlotte to the wild crowd in Cooperstown, the tour was a kaleidoscope of experiences.
To help capture the spirit of the tour, we teamed up with Lomography to send RKS a Lomography Simple Use Reloadable Camera loaded with Color Negative 400 Film. Armed with this compact and colorful tool, the band documented their favorite memories, creating a "yearbook" of candid, irreplaceable snapshots to look back on for years to come.
In this interview, the band shares how this tour stood out from the rest—with new touring members, revamped stage setups, and heartfelt fan connections. They also dive into the joys of making music on the road and what it means to slow down and savor the ride.
Read on for insights into life on tour with Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and don’t miss their thoughts on fans, favorite tracks, and what it feels like to create in the chaos of the road.
LUNA: How did your fall tour go? Are there any memorable moments or cities that stood out to you?
RKS: Tour was incredible. Every show had kind of had its own vibe. In Cooperstown the crowd was wild. We loved the DC show too! Playing our first arena and Raleigh and Charlotte was special. It's all been special.
LUNA: Touring can be a whirlwind—how does capturing moments on film help you slow down and appreciate the experience?
RKS: I mean they serve as a yearbook. We'll look back at these photos and remember things about this tour we might've otherwise forgot.
LUNA: What does a typical show day look like for you?
RKS: Wake up late, soundcheck, write songs or sight see, then get ready for the show. It's all routine!
LUNA: How did the shows on this tour differ from past tours? Have you introduced any new elements to your setlist or stage setup?
RKS: Well we have two new touring members now, Maddie and Drew. And Jess has been out on paternaty leave so we had a sub drummer in for this tour! We also have a whole new light rig and bleachers on the stage.
LUNA: Touring can be both exhilarating and exhausting. What’s something about this tour that has really energized you or kept you grounded?
RKS: Making music. I've never really made music on the road until now, and I've loved it. We set up a little studio in the green room and just have fun. There was a period where I'd try to write at least one a day.
LUNA: How do you connect with fans on the road? Have there been any interactions or stories from fans that have inspired you this time around?
RKS: Oh the fans have been awesome. They'll bring gifts and posters to the shows. The most fun this tour has been collecting kandies that fans made. They'll throw them on the stage or pass them to us or the crew. We have stacks on stacks. It's been really sweet.
LUNA: What’s been your favorite track from the new project to play live?
RKS: SVO has hit hard. I think the crowds have really liked that one.
LUNA: Describe a RKS show in 3 words.
RKS: Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Does that count? Haha
