From The Road: Last Dinosaurs

FUELED WITH ADRENALINE FROM THE ENERGY OF THEIR CROWD — Last Dinosaurs’ powerhouse of music reflects in their audience’s vibrant liveliness. From touring the streets of Singapore to playing their latest album From Mexico with Love in Mexico itself, Last Dinosaurs made the most of their adventurous and intimate tour life. Having driven most of the tour themselves in their own van across the US, they share raw snapshots of their close moments with one another on the road.

The Australian based indie-rock band recounts their favorite memories of performing, including their pre-show preparations, as well as taking us step by step through an ordinary show day.  Aside from being pumped up to perform alongside other bands, the band didn’t fail to make time for themselves to wind down, have fun, and explore the areas they traveled to.

We teamed up with RETO to send the band a disposable camera to capture their time on the road. For our From The Road series Last Dinosaurs share some exciting and documented moments from their tour travels. Filled with eagerness to continue performing, they are more than thrilled to create new music and hint to eventually get back on the road again very soon. Read on to learn more about their performance experiences and exciting future steps as a band into the year.

LUNA: Can you share a favorite memory from your recent live shows?

LAST DINOSAURS: It's hard to pin down a favourite, but it was pretty special returning to these countries and doing that first show back after the pandemic stopped it all. The reception has been amazing wherever we are, but Singapore really upped their energy when we played there at the end of 2022.

LUNA: What's been your favorite track to play live?

LAST DINOSAURS: Playing the new songs has been super fun, seeing the reactions to “CDMX” when we played in Mexico was pretty special!

LUNA: Do you have any preshow rituals?

LAST DINOSAURS: We usually just shake out any nerves, Lach does a bit of shadow boxing, Sean will do a few jumps and deep breathes. And we'll do a bit of a formal high five, one between each band member and the others, then accompanied with a couple words of encouragement. We try to keep that energy for the stage though!

LUNA: Take us through a typical show day.

LAST DINOSAURS: Usually we start mid afternoon with load-in and sound check. Lots of downtime as we set the stage, lights and tune the systems. Then if we're somewhere new we have some exploring time and grab a bite to eat before we head back to the venue to watch the opener and maybe have a beer or two. There's a lot of waiting around for that hour on stage, but it's always interesting being somewhere new.

LUNA: What's the best part of performing in a live setting?

LAST DINOSAURS: Definitely the crowd reaction. We feed off the audience in a live setting, and it just wouldn't be the same without them being there and being loud. Sometimes the crowd is also the most difficult thing about a live performance! Thankfully that doesn't happen much!

LUNA: How have you seen your live performance evolve over time?

LAST DINOSAURS: With this last album being sung by Lach, we've seen him now sharing a lot more front-man singing in the set which has been great. We've also taken lessons being on the road with tighter bands than us, it always makes you go: "Damn, we gotta make our show spotless like this!"

LUNA: What is your favorite story behind a photo from this roll of film?

LAST DINOSAURS: Honestly that roll is a blur, metaphorically and literally! I can't decipher which shows each belong to out of that 29 show run, it certainly blends together. The shot of me leaning on the van's driver seat certainly brings it all rushing back. We spent a LOT of time on the road driving ourselves on that tour. So really the memories mostly come from that drivers' seat, seeing way more of the US than we had ever seen before. It was quite an adventure!

LUNA: What intentions do you have for the upcoming months and the new year?

LAST DINOSAURS: We're going into the studio soon to make another album and keep that momentum rolling, and we're building out the year with lots of international touring and a couple of exciting festival announcements! So stay tuned!
